California The Sacramento Municipal Utility District is planning to build the 400-MW Iowa Hill Pumped Storage Facility at Pollock Pines. The facility will consist of a 200-ft-tall, 5,900-ft-long earth- and rock-fill dam and a 1,000-ft-deep shaft through 3,500 ft of tunnels carrying water from the reservoir to an underground powerhouse. Jacobs Associates has been selected as the owner's engineer. The project is valued at between $300 million and $400 million. Illinois Coldwell Banker is planning to convert the former Pickens-Kane Moving & Storage building in Chicago into a research center for digital manufacturing technology. The six-story, 285,000-sq-ft building, located at 909 Bliss St. on Goose Island, will house UI Labs, a research and commercialization collaborative between several universities and major companies. The lab will apply mobile, cloud and high-performance computing technologies to manufacturing challenges, reducing costs through greater use of technology, from robotics to visualization. Kentucky CSX Transportation Inc., is planning to build a new rail inspection yard in Hopkinsville. The facility will stage trains for inspection and fueling, and will support coal trains servicing Kentucky mines. It will expand the railroad's network capacity and efficiency and support the expected growth of freight shipments along the entire corridor spanning Evansville, Ind., Birmingham, Ala., and Chattanooga, Tenn. North Carolina LRC V, a developer led by Chris Howlett and Louis Gonzalez, is planning to develop Carolina Crossing II in Chapel Hill. The project will consist of two seven-story, 84,000-sq-ft medical office buildings and a 192,000-sq-ft parking garage on a five-acre site located at 5936 Farrington Rd. The project includes the demolition of Farrington Road Baptist Church, which will relocate to a new facility nearby. The Carolina Crossing II project is valued at between $25 million and $50 million. Massachusetts Tocci Building Cos., serving as the construction manager, has commenced construction on Brookside Square, a mixed-use project in West Concord. The three-story, 126,000-sq-ft building will contain 74 apartments and 36,000 sq ft of commercial and office space. The developer is Oak Tree Development, and it was designed by The Architectural Team. It is expected to be completed by December, 2015. The project is valued at $32 million. Oklahoma Manhattan Construction Co. has started building the parking garage addition to the Society of Exploration Geologists office building in Tulsa. Louisiana 6/11 The Recovery School District is seeking bidders to build the Ernest "Dutch" Morial School, a combination middle school and high school located at 7701 Grant St. in New Orleans. The three-story, 139,406-sq-ft building is located in the New Orleans East neighborhood. It is being designed by Waggonner & Ball Architects. The project is valued at $33 million. Colorado 6/12 The Auraria Higher Education Center is requesting proposals for project manager/owner's representative services for the Auraria Library renovation project. The Auraria Library, located in Denver, serves three universities: University of Colorado Denver, the Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Community College of Denver. The 180,000-sq-ft building will be renovated in two phases. The funding for phase 1 has been set at $4 million, and phase 2 funding, which has not yet been approved by the state legislature, is approximately $14.6 million.
