The equipment manufacturer most construction professionals recognize for popularizing the skid-steer loader has completed a three-and-a-half-year research and development effort resulting in a new multi-functional compact machine. Looking for ways to help fleet owners supplement skid-steers with another piece of equipment that can use interchangeable work-tool attachments, Bobcat Co. of West Fargo, N.D., unveiled the Toolcat 5600 compact utility vehicle at World of Concrete, held Feb. 4-7 in Las Vegas. The Toolcat is a two-speed, hydrostatically driven machine with four-wheel drive, all-wheel steer, and 18-mph top speed. A hydraulically operated boom in front supports attachments, while a dump body and

A general contractor located in Westlake, La., has patented a new pipe-handling attachment and is offering it to other interested contractors across the globe. According to company representatives, the new attachment saves money by increasing safety and cutting the time it takes to install pipe by 30%. After digging trenches, contractors typically lay pipe segments by rigging them to a hydraulic excavator's bucket. But according to David Abshire, vice president of River West Enterprises Inc., a sister company of
Hard numbers on the decorative concrete segment are not yet available, but professionals say the market is growing rapidly. (Photo courtesy of World of Concrete) A small, yet rapidly growing segment of the concrete construction industry is in decorative methods and materials for residential and commercial applications. According to those involved in concrete aesthetics, the market is gaining rapid attention from owners, contractors and designers who want to transform traditional concrete surfaces into more beautiful-looking materials--such as marble or granite--for a price two-thirds less than the real thing. As far as artists are concerned, a concrete slab is a blank
STAIN-RESISTANT JOINT SEALANT For Aesthetically Sensitive Buildings Dow Corning 991 is a one-component silicone joint sealant with proprietary stain-resistant technology. It is now offered in North America as an alternative to the two-part Dow Corning 756 Silicone Building Sealant-H.P., due to industry's demand for weatherproofing sealants that resist staining of sensitive substrates and streaking on glass and metal curtain wall panels. The 991 sealant is a ready-to-use version that cures to a traditional semi-gloss finish. Its rapid tack-free time helps reduce dirt pickup, the company says. After discovering mechanical defects, two power tool manufacturers have urged end-users to return a total of 204,000 circular saws and electric grinders. Makita USA Inc., La Mirada, Calif., recalled its model 5740NB circular saw with 71/4-in. blade. The manufacturer says that the lower blade guard can become jammed. About 180,000 units exist in the field today. Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp., Brookfield, Wis., has similarly recalled its 15-amp electric grinders with 7- and 9-in. discs. According to the manufacturer, the "on/off" switch can become stuck in the "on" position. The manufacturer estimates that 24,000 of these grinders currently are in use.

CONCRETE PUMPING EQUIPMENT Overhead Roll-and-Fold Boom The new S61SX concrete pump features 198 ft of reach. The manufacturer claims it to be the longest boom pump in the industry. The four-section, overhead roll-and-fold boom is capable of reaching out, up and below grade with no dead spots. Because the boom's first section can be angled back, the other three sections can be guided into enclosed decks with ease. With the patented telescoping Super X outriggers, the reach and versatility of the equipment is capable even on a crowded jobsite. It maintains up to 1,169 psi for concrete. Schwing America Inc.;
