Located at the intersection of Pallisa and Kaliro districts in eastern Uganda, this project represents a significant stride forward for regional connectivity and socio-economic development, according to the project submittal. Prior to construction of the 60-meter bridge and 0.5-km approach roads, residents relied on a canoe system to cross the River Mpologoma and Saaka Swamp.
In the design phase, the weak subsoils and fluctuating water level of the swamp required rapid geotechnical investigations, the project team points out. With an eye to optimizing structural safety and resource efficiency, team members decided to use deep pile foundations, dynamically calibrating them to match the hydrological conditions in each section of the swamp.
The team also employed modular construction methods to minimize activities in water-logged zones, according to the submitters. Key superstructure elements were prefabricated on-site and assembled in sequence, accelerating the project’s progress and reducing its worker safety and structural precision risks.
Despite the challenging conditions, the international team working on this project delivered it at budget and 11 months ahead of schedule, with a zero lost-time injury rate.
