Michigan The Headlands Arts and Science Center has selected Buchanan & Co. to lead the design-build team for the Science Center in the Headlands.Serving as construction manager and general contractor, Buchanan & Co. will select an architectural firm to team with later this year. The project entails the construction of a five-story, 180,000-sq-ft building in the Headlands, a 600-acre public park designated as an international dark-sky park, located in Emmet County near Mackinaw City. Construction is expected to start in spring 2013. The estimated construction cost is between $35 million and $50 million. Missouri Woodmont Outlets is planning to build the Spirit of St. Louis Outlets mall in Chesterfield. The job entails building a 555,000-sq-ft development on a 55-acre site at the intersection of Interstate 64 and U.S. Highway 40. The 250-store mall will anchor Chesterfield Blue Valley, a mix of hotel, office, restaurant and entertainment venues. The project is valued at $85 million. New York FreshDirect, an online grocer, is planning to build a new headquarters and operations center in the Bronx. The project entails constructing a 500,000-sq-ft building on a 16-acre site at Harlem River Yards. The facility is being designed by Cybul & Cybul Architects. Arizona Tutor Perini Building Corp. is starting construction of the new Vee Quiva Casino in Laveen. The project entails building a 178,000-sq-ft structure that will contain a casino and a 90-room hotel as well as a cast-in-place, four-story, 1,000-slot covered parking garage. The current casino will remain open until the new casino opens in summer 2013. The project owner is the Gila River Indian Community. The project has been valued at $82 million. Georgia Hunt Guillot and Associates has started construction of a bio-coal manufacturing plant in Cordele for Vega Biofuels. The project entails the construction of a 90,000-sq-ft building that will contain the plant as well as Vega's new headquarters. The plant will produce briquettes from timber waste; the briquettes will be supplied to coal-fired powerplants. The project is valued at between $15 million and $25 million. Illinois Northwestern University currently is evaluating bids for the Bienen School of Music building in Evanston. The project entails constructing a five-story, 152,573-sq-ft building containing a 400-seat recital hall, a 150-seat opera rehearsal room/black-box theater and a 2,400-sq-ft choral rehearsal room, as well as classrooms, teaching studios, practice rooms and administrative offices. Furthermore, the project also includes a 120-ft-wide outdoor pedestrian green, which will serve as a gateway for the campus arts complex and a setting for special events. Utah Jacobsen Construction Co. has started building the Provo City Center Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The project entails building an 86,000-sq-ft structure that will contain the sanctuary as well as other rooms for functions such as marriages, baptisms and instructional sessions. The temple will replace the Provo Tabernacle, which was gutted by fire in December 2010. The new temple was designed by FFKR Architects. The project is valued at between $5 million and $10 million. Washington 6/15 The Federal Way Coalition for the Performing Arts is seeking bidders to build the Federal Way Civic and Performing Arts Center. The job entails building a 700-seat performing-arts center, a 14,000-sq-ft conference center, an 8,000-sq-ft lobby and four smaller meeting rooms totaling about 4,000 sq ft. California 6/20 The City of Los Angeles is seeking proposals and statements of qualifications for design and construction support services for the Sixth Street Viaduct replacement. The project entails designing a replacement for the viaduct, which is 3,500 ft long and four lanes wide and spans the Los Angeles River, the Santa Ana Freeway and the Golden State Freeway as well as Metrolink and Union Pacific railroad tracks and several local streets.
