ALABAMA The Westervelt Co. is planning to build a wood-fuel-pellet plant , which will produce 250,000 metric tons of pellets per year. It will be located on a 104-acre site adjoining the Tenn-Tom Waterway on Highway 17 near Aliceville. The project’s initial phase will entail construction of the main plant building, a new barge loading facility and several auxiliary structures to house process equipment and raw materials. A possible second phase will include demolition of the former Huyck Felt Plant building and an expansion of the main plant. The owner expects to select a contractor by September. PENNSYLVANIA The Quakertown Community School District is planning to renovate Quakertown High School . The project will entail overhauling the heating and cooling systems, building four new state-of-the-art science labs and moving the library to an area currently occupied by a courtyard. The project also includes making the building ADA compliant and more secure by moving the administrative offices to the front of the building. The design work is being done by The Architectural Studio of Allentown. The project is expected to take four years because it will be done while the school is occupied. Construction could begin as early as the fall of 2012 and be completed in 2016. The estimated construction cost is $60 million. ALASKA The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, has selected American Mechanical Inc. to provide design-build services to complete the start-up requirements of a primary facility and construction of supporting infrastructure for 110 single-family housing units at Fort Wainwright. The project includes: the commissioning and activation of water, sewer and heating and ventilation systems; roadways; replacement of water-heating system circulation pumps; a skating rink and landscaping; pedestrian bridges; and drainage structures. CALIFORNIA The East Bay Regional Park District has selected Gray Bowen and Co. Inc. to provide project management services for the 1.7-mile San Francisco Bay Trail from the Martinez Intermodal Center to Crockett and a 1.6-mile segment of the Iron Horse Regional Trail from the Pleasanton/Dublin Bay Area Rapid Transit Station to Santa Rita Road. FLORIDA Childers Construction has been selected by Florida State University to provide design-build services for a new indoor practice facility . The new structure will include 65,000 sq ft of mechanically ventilated and/or conditioned space, and will be located and integrated into the site of the current football practice fields on the campus in Tallahassee. ILLINOIS Ridge Property Trust has selected Krusinski Construction Co. to build the first phase of the RidgePort Logistics Center in Wilmington. Ultimately, RidgePort will be a 20-million-sq-ft logistics park, containing a mix of industrial, office and commercial buildings located less than 10 miles south of the I-55/I-80 interchange, with a rail spur to the main BNSF rail line. The first phase entails a mile long roadway, 500 ft of railway and a 1-million-gallon, 142-ft-tall water tower. The first phase is expected to be completed by June 2012. NEW York The State University Construction Fund has selected LPCiminelli to provide construction management services for the restoration of Hayes Hall at the Buffalo campus. The project, which will begin this year and be completed in 2014, will not only renew infrastructure within the 81,000-sq-ft building but also create new interior spaces. The project involves selective demolition, renovations, additions and new construction for the 7.5-million-gallon-per-day municipal drinking water treatment plant.
