DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects was selected by the District of Columbia Office of Planning and the District Dept. of Transportation to prepare a study for the creation of a new traffic gateway into the core of the city. The study will focus on N. Capitol St. from Michigan Ave. to Hawaii Ave. N.E., and Irving St., Michigan Ave. from First St. N.W. The gateway would bring improve balance between the pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow and provide initial design ideas for replacing a highway-style interchange with a more pedestrian-oriented design. FLORIDA The Pompano Beach Planning and Zoning Board approved site plans for the Atlantic Yacht Club Villas to be located on 6.5 acres in Pompano Beach. Pasquale Kuritzky Architecture Inc. was selected by Clarion Pompano Development Inc. to provide architectural design services for the luxury waterfront townhouse community, which consists of 89 two and three-story luxury townhomes in multiple buildings, a recreation building with fitness room, pool and cabanas, and a new marina basin for approximately 50 boats. HAWAII KYA Design Group is the design firm selected for the three-phase Campus Center renovation and expansion project at University of Hawaii at Mãnoa. Phase one, which has been completed, included minor renovations in the campus. Phase two consists of construction of a new recreational center, which include a multipurpose court gym, class studios, locker and shower facilities and more. Phase three consists of major renovations on the campus center, which encompasses any additional renovation and upkeep to the campus center. KANSAS Cessna Aircraft Co. announced that it will build the new Citation Columbus design and assembly facility located near Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita. McCluggage VanSickle & Perry and Professional Engineering Consultants P.A. were hired to provide architecture and engineering services for the stand-alone, 619,00-sq-ft facility. Intended to seek LEED certification, the new building will house engineering offices and final assembly for the Citation Columbus. LOUISIANA-MISSISSIPPI ARCADIS announced that it has been selected to provide design services for the Violet Freshwater Diversion Project. ARCADIS will provide engineering design services that will determine the cost-effectiveness and environmental acceptability of diverting Mississippi River water in the vicinity of Violet, La., into the Biloxi Marshes and Mississippi Sound. With a $6-million contract value, the costal restoration project is a major feature in the Louisiana Master Plan for Hurricane Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Program. NEW JERSEY Lillibridge has partnered with Meridian Health to develop a new three-story, 150,000-sq-ft consumer-driven outpatient medical facility in Jackson. Known as Meridian Health Village, the unique Y-shaped design will include an internal medical-family practice area, a women’s and children’s health area, and a section for medical and surgical specialists. In addition to the three service areas, the building will house a surgery center, imaging center, urgent care center, rehabilitation, phlebotomy laboratory and patient education area, as well as food service area, a community-based fitness center, medical spa and other services. PENNSYLVANIA The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission selected the team of STV Inc. and Reynolds Construction Management to provide construction-inspection and project-management services for a new central administration data center to be built in Middletown. The project involves renovations to an existing building, which will house the main data processing center, communications PBX room and the EZ Pass and traffic operations center. CALIFORNIA Morley Construction Co. has begun construction on the five-story, 63,000-sq-ft Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research on the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus in Los Angeles. USC is the first of 12 prestigious institutions to formally break ground on a stem cell research facility that is funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Designed to obtain a LEED silver rating, the $65-million facility will be connected to the Zikha Institute via a glass skywalk that will facilitate equipment and information sharing between the two centers. CALIFORNIA Construction of the new Viejas Boulevard Bridge is well under way by Hazard Construction Co. for the County of San Diego, Dept. of Public Works. Located over a tributary of the Sweetwater River in the unincorporated community of Descanso, north of Interstate 8 at Rte. 79 in San Diego County, the estimated $3.2-million project entails construction of a new cast-in-place concrete bridge to replace an old steel-girder bridge. GEORGIA The Caddell-Clark Joint Venture was awarded a $49.9-million design-build contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, for a new, 325,400-sq-ft barracks complex at Fort Benning. The project includes five standard barracks with company operations facilities, one law equipment building and exterior physical training facilities. Completion is scheduled for November. MARYLAND Groundbreaking ceremonies were recently held for The Fitzgerald at UB Midtown located next to the Lyric Opera House and Mount Royal Station in Baltimore’s Cultural District. The Bozzuto Group is developer, as well as constructor, and will manage the $75-million mixed-use project, which include 280 luxury apartments, 14,000 sq ft of street-level retail space, and a 1,245-space parking garage. MICHIGAN A joint venture of Skanska USA Building Inc. Barton Malow was awarded a $56.1-million contract to serve as construction manager and design-builder for the $213-million, 558,000-sq-ft William Beaumont Hospital project located in Troy. Harley Ellis Devereaux was selected to provide design services for the multiphase project, which includes a 223,000-sq-ft emergency center and critical care tower, a three-story ambulatory care center, a vertical expansion of the west tower and a bridge linking the existing main campus to the new ambulatory center. NORTH CAROLINA The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $53.4-million contract to the Cashman-Republic joint venture for construction and expansion of the wharf at Military Ocean Terminal in Sunny Point. OHIO The joint venture of Turner Construction Co. and Smoot Construction Co. was selected to provide construction-management services for the 700,000-sq-ft Nationwide Children’s Replacement Hospital located on the existing hospital campus in Columbus. The project includes a hematology-oncology-blood and marrow transplant unit, a neurodiagnostics center and a pediatric intensive care unit. OREGON  A consortium led by Black & Veatch and including Kiewit, VINCI Construction Grands Projects and Entrepose Contracting has been selected by Jordan Cove Energy L.P. to provide EPC services for the Jordan Cove Energy Project in Coos Bay, jointly owned by Fort Chicago Energy Partners L.P. and Energy Projects Development LLC. The proposed project consists of a new liquefied natural gas import terminal, which will be able to deliver up to 1 billion cu ft of natural gas per day to customers in the Pacific Northwest, northern California and northern Nevada.  TEXAS Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. has been awarded a contract by the Port of Houston Authority to provide program-management services for phase two of their $1.4-billion Bayport Terminal project.
