Officials proposed contractor Big D Builders Inc. of Meridian, Idaho, pay nearly $200,000 in fines after a co-owner and two other workers were killed in the collapse.

Families of two of the three workers killed in the collapse are suing the general contractor and other companies involved with the project.

Temporary channels are open for shipping, with reopening of the main channel slated for May. 

Three workers were killed and five of the injured were hospitalized in critical condition when the under construction pre-engineered hanger collapsed Jan. 31.

On-the-job fatality rate rose by 11% in 2022 for construction and extraction workers, the second highest of all industries, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Construction-related injuries in 2022 increased in New York City compared to the previous year.  

Fatal construction accidents were down about 2% overall in 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, but some types of construction accidents saw worrying increases.

Industry's 1,061 construction fatalities in 2019 is the highest number since 2007, BLS says.
