On March 19, Southern Co. reported that the Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion project team has identified the need for additional construction remediation work at the Georgia construction site.
With the Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion’s first in-service deadline of November 2021 looming, two monitoring groups testified to state regulators in June that they could not accurately forecast when construction would complete.
The utility says a recent 20% reduction in the project’s workforce due to the coronavirus pandemic shouldn't affect the in-service date targets for the new nuclear units.
After pushing to cap its financial responsibility for escalating construction costs at the Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion, project co-owner Oglethorpe Power Corp. was still considering Georgia Power’s demands to approve continued construction without new conditions late on Sept. 25.
