Within days of the earthquake and tsunami that severely damaged Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co. and the Japanese government were in talks with equipment manufacturers about how their specialized machines could lend a hand. Cargo planes airlifted huge concrete pumps to water-cool the reactors, and a robotics manufacturer known primarily as a defense contractor stepped forward with an unusual proposal. “We had contacted TEPCO, and after a demonstration of our equipment they chose to deploy it to the site,” says Ed Godere, senior vice president, unmanned systems, QinetiQ North America, Reston, Va. Navistar International Corp. has submitted test data to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its first on-road truck engine to meet federal clean-diesel mandates without using selective-catalytic-reduction technology (SCR). Regulators' approval of the 13-liter MaxxForce engine, a necessary step to ensure that Navistar's tailpipe controls work, is expected in three to six months, says the Warrenville, Ill.-based manufacturer. Navistar has objected to SCR, which requires a periodic fill-up with urea, claiming truckers don't want the hassle. The manufacturer is the sole supplier that uses only exhaust-gas recirculation to lower its smog output.

Despite sluggish construction activity, the mood was noticeably upbeat at the largest construction event of the year, the CONEXPO-CON/AGG show, held on March 22-26 in Las Vegas. Nearly 120,000 people showed up for the event, where 2,400 exhibitors displayed equipment, products and services over 2.34 million sq ft. The turnout was about 17% lower than the previous CONEXPO, in March 2008, which saw more than 144,000 visitors. However, vendors and attendees alike say that pent-up demand for heavy machinery and related products worldwide lifted the atmosphere in Las Vegas. “The increased global participation by attendees and exhibitors underscores the importance
