Texas air quality may be improving. The Environmental Protection Agency announced recently that it agrees with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality that the Houston area is meeting federal guidelines for a particulate matter known as PM2.5. In heavy concentrations, PM2.5, composed of tiny particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can be hazardous. A century-old Catholic community at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plantersville engaged the Worship Place Studio of Houston-based Ziegler Cooper Architects to help the parish expand. The church was not interested in a new sanctuary or big change. An episode of the History Channel’s “Mega Movers” inspired church leaders to challenge Ziegler Cooper to come up with a similar concept. The $133-million Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas is scheduled to open later this year. The long-span and cantilever steel structure was designed by New York-based RMJM Hillier Architecture with Dallas-based Datum Engineering as the structural engineer and Austin Commercial of Dallas as the general contractor. The center is made of structural steel trusses, girders and columns with lightweight composite concrete floor slabs. It uses traditional steel framing and castellated beams.
