Construction of the new Y-Tec Keylex Mexico Automotive Parts Manufacturing Facility on Mazda's new Guanajuato automobile manufacturing campus required a multicultural approach by contractor Kajima|Alberici. The team had to manage members in the U. S., Japan and Mexico—and in all three countries' respective languages—while working under a very tight schedule to meet already-committed production dates.
To achieve the owner's design objectives, design and engineering followed international standards while also taking into consideration local construction approaches and practices. Three-dimensional building information modeling played a key role in planning and coordinating design and engineering, too.
Kajima|Alberici's safety goal was to execute the project with zero reported incidents. Work was completed in 900,000 man-hours, with only one reportable injury and no lost-time incidents. One judge called this record "a testament to the value of the project's culture of safety."
