This former Delft University of Technology building has been transformed into a sustainable, inspiring office space for Haskoning. Originally built in 1912, the heritage-listed structure now meets the ambitious Paris Proof energy target, eliminating fossil fuel consumption entirely and cutting energy use by more than 75%.
The project team’s challenge was to preserve the building’s historic charm while creating a modern, energy-efficient workspace. Key features include two new light-filled atriums, which optimize energy use and foster collaboration.
The atrium roof integrates 604 solar panels that generate 25% of the building’s energy. The design integrates circular principles with recycled materials, a demountable roof and upcycled furniture. Extensive restoration work addressed structural issues, including rotting beams and hazardous materials such as asbestos and chromium-6.
The project team balanced sustainability with heritage, creating a dynamic hub for 1,000 employees and a showcase of modern architectural renovation.
