Phishing Attack Steals Fla. City's Payment to Contractor
Ocala, Fla., is the latest city to fall victim to a “spear phishing” cyberattack by scammers posing as representatives of a local contractor. Using hacked information for a legitimate $742,000 invoice from Ausley Construction, perpetrators convinced the city to redirect payment to what proved to be a fake bank account. A similar construction invoice-themed phishing attack in August cost Naples, Fla., $700,000. Three other Florida cities reported spear phish attempts, in which deceptive emails appear to come from trusted sources.
