Australia The Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation is planning to build a nuclear medicine molybdenum-99 manufacturing plant. The plant will be located in Menai, about 25 miles southwest of Sydney. The plant will include special shielded cells for the processing to ensure operator safety and systems to ensure gaseous emissions are safely controlled. Molybdenum-99 is used to produce technetium-99, a medical isotope used for diagnosing heart disease, cancers, and kidney and gastrointestinal tract disorders. The greenfield refinery will have a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day. It will be designed to process Kuwaiti crude and will include an integrated aromatics complex and polypropylene production.
