The five-story, 400,000-sq-ft building was built in 1901 and has been vacant since 1986. The project, called Express Newark, will convert 29,000 sq ft of the first floor into a Whole Foods supermarket and create 182 apartments on the upper floors. Rhode Island Deepwater Wind Holdings LLC has given Alstom formal notice to proceed on the 30-MW Deepwater Wind Farm, located three miles southeast of Block Island. The project will consist of five turbines and transmission cables running approximately 20 miles underwater to Narragansett. Gulf Island Fabrication will build the steel latticework foundations for the turbines, while Alstom will supply the turbines. The turbines will be about 600 ft tall.
