A new version of a program for integrated analysis and design of bridges can combine composite results and apply them to every section automatically, as well as perform live-load analysis to flag worst possible loading combinations for any point of interest on the bridge.

SAM V. 4.5 is given away at www.LRFDsoftware.com by Bestech Systems Ltd., New York City and the U.K. "We thought we would give people a no-risk option to try it. If they like it, let them keep it and we’ll charge them for maintenance and support," says U.S. marketing manager Chris Austin.

Price will depend on the modules taken but will typically run between $1,000 and $3,000 per year.

Austin says one of SAM’s important capabilities is the integration between design and analysis of steel composite or precast prestressed concrete beams. "Beam design and structural analysis–we’ve brought the two together," he says.

New features include finite element analysis, tools for analyzing curved decks and 3D live-load optimization to the Load and Resistance Factor Design bridge specifications of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
