A new suite of hardware and software tools that is expected to hit the market this week is designed to wireless-enable sensing and control equipment to form a robust network that will organize itself automatically.

The EmberNet product suite, from Ember Corp., Boston, is set for launch Sept. 23. It was developed out of work at the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The system dedicates a small, low-power transmitter/receiver to every sensor and control. Each unit sends its data to a gateway receiver that is hard-wired into a control system, and which serves as a repeater for any other sensors within range.

Together, the sensors form a redundant matrix with multiple paths for data to flow, enhancing reliability, improving signal quality and enabling the units to operate low power, the company says. The system can be expanded at will without complex wiring or planning.
