Joel Gutierrez , chief financial officer of recycling and demolition firm Cherry, Houston, was recently honored as a recipient of the Houston Business Journal’s 2011 Best CFO of the Year Awards. Recognized in the emerging private company category, he was cited for helping the firm improve profit margins and for taking advantage of approximately $2 million in state grants to lower air emissions.
Michael P. Batuna has joined Fugro Consultants Inc., Dallas, as project manager in the pavements group. He will expand the firm’s services to the transportation industry in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Angela Floyd has been named corporate vice president of business improvement at Balfour Beatty Construction, Dallas. Floyd joined Balfour Beatty in 2004 as director of performance awareness.

Erin Silva Robbins has joined Cleary Zimmermann Engineers as a plumbing designer. The San Antonio-based firm also hired Frank Flores as a project manager for its commissioning department and Randall “ Randy ” Barnhill as project manager in its mechanical division. Barnhill has more than 17 years of experience in the HVAC industry, with 13 years of experience in HVAC design.
Karen Farmer has been promoted to associate on the aviation team at Corgan Associates in Dallas. Farmer joined the firm in 1997 as an architectural intern and has remained on the aviation team ever since. Bob Emery was promoted to vice president of Corgan’s aviation team. He has worked in aviation since he joined the firm in 1999, working on such projects as the refurbishment of Terminal One at Abu Dhabi International Airport, Terminal E at the George Bush International Airport in Houston, the modernization of Dallas Love Field and the line baggage screening systems for Terminals A and C at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
Mark Henderson has joined HOK, Houston, as health-care director. Henderson has more than 25 years of experience in health-care architecture. He will oversee the firm’s health-care endeavors along the Texas Gulf Coast, working with staff as a mentor. Henderson previously worked as the principal health-care market leader for architectural firm NBBJ in Seattle.

Kenneth Atkinson has been named vice president of service at Gowan Inc., a Houston mechanical and sheet metal contractor and a unit of specialty contractor EMCOR Group Inc.
Robert Patton has re-joined CTL|Thompson Texas, Dallas, a geotechnical, environmental and materials engineering firm. Patton, one of the founding principals of the firm, will manage operations of the office that provides materials testing, pavement design and geotechnical services. He was most recently a senior consultant with Fugro Consultants Inc. and has worked on a variety of Texas infrastructure projects. Patton has also held lead roles in geotechnical engineering and design. He has been involved in such projects as the Trinity River Corridor and the President George Bush Turnpike/Dallas North Tollway extensions. Patton helped start CTL|Thompson Texas when his former company, Patton and Burke, joined forces with CTL|Thompson founder Bob Thompson.
Joe McCoy has joined Spider, a division of SafeWorks LLC, as district sales representative for its New Orleans location. In the Louisiana/Mississippi territory, McCoy has responsibility for solving the suspended access and safety challenges of contractors and facility owners in energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, O&M and construction end markets. He previously served as vice president of Halo Equipment LLC, Houma, La., an offshore rigging supplier.

Marjorie K. Simmons was appointed CEO of SHW Group, which has Texas offices in Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. She replaces Gary Blanton, who was based in Plano, Texas, and who has left the firm. Simmons is founder of DSA Architects, which merged with SHW Group in 2003. Her appointment makes SHW Group the only member of the American Institute of Architects’ Large Firm Roundtable to have a woman CEO. The roundtable is a forum to discuss issues of mutual interest to large design firms and architects. Simmons is based in SHW Group’s Berkeley, Mich., office.
David P. Sauls , principal in the Baton Rouge, La., office of GeoEngineers Inc., was recently promoted to leader of the firm’s south business unit, which includes offices in Baton Rouge and Springfield, Mo. GeoEngineers, an earth science engineering technology firm, is based in Seattle. Sauls had been managing principal of GeoEngineers’ Baton Rouge office and is licensed in 12 states.
Paul Asteris and Mezio S. Zangirolami have been promoted to senior project designers by FKP Architects, Houston. Asteris has more than 15 years of health-care design experience focused on pediatric and academic medical facilities. For more than 10 years, Zangirolami has been designing patient care environments.

Stacey Schexnayder has been hired as marketing director of The McDonnel Group LLC, Metairie, La. Schexnayder has more than 10 years of experience leading marketing efforts of professional services firms. She is past president of the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services and the 2010 recipient of the organization’s Hall of Fame Marketing Achievement Award. She serves on the New Orleans Committee of Global Green.
Kathi Harris was named emissions business manager for HOLT CAT, the Caterpillar equipment and engine dealer for South, Central, North and Northeast Texas. Harris will lead strategy development, marketing and training for emissions solutions for HOLT. Her focus will include assisting HOLT personnel and customers with stationary engine emissions issues, coordination of the introduction of Tier 4 products for machines and engines, managing incentive programs such as the Texas Emissions Reduction Program, and working with corporate sustainability programs. She previously served as the air quality program director for an Austin-based firm.

Benjamin Matthews received this year’s Society of American Military Engineers President’s Medal. Matthews is a project manager in the Dallas office of Atkins plc, one of the UK’s largest engineering and design consultant firms. Since 1992, the SAME President’s Medal recognizes outstanding leadership and accomplishment in support of the SAME strategic plan during the awarding president’s term in office.
Houston-based ccrd partners, a mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering design and commissioning firm, has promoted four managers to associate principal and company stockholder. Jared Machala is a lead mechanical engineer in ccrd’s Houston office whose portfolio includes numerous high containment facilities such as radiochemistry laboratories and clean rooms. Shaun Grimm,based in Phoenix, was the lead electrical engineer for Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin. Mark Montgomery started the firm’s Denver office, where he currently serves as office manager and lead electrical engineer. He is currently project manager for Phase 1 of the Castle Rock Adventist Health Center in Castle Rock, Colo., due for completion in 2013. Nolan Rome, also Phoenix-based, helped start that office in 2007 and now is its office manager and lead mechanical engineer.
