The $1 billion project is called The Green Build and officials say it will create 1,000 jobs at peak construction as well as qualify for a LEED silver certification. Completion is scheduled for early 2013.

Flatiron, in a join venture with Turner and PCL Construction Services, Inc., will be working on the expansion of the Terminal 2 West building and airside (the runway side of the new terminal building). Turner will manage construction of the 470,000-sq-ft expansion as the majority partner and design-builder. Flatiron will be the construction manager for the airside portion of the contract. This phase also includes the addition of 1.5 million sq ft of new taxiway and jet parking. HTNB is the architect for this phase.

A joint venture of Kiewit and Sundt Construction will work on the land side portion of The Green Build, including the dual-level roadway, check-in curb and parking improvements. URS Corp. is handling the design elements.

With 18 million passengers passing through SDIA each year, it is projected that the airport's passengers will increase from 27 to 33 million by 2030.
