For the University of Virginia’s Inn at Darden – The Forum Hotel in Charlottesville, Va., “We had to wrestle with a lot of unforeseen conditions” such as rocks, unstable soil and COVID-19, says Patrick Barbier, senior project manager for construction manager at-risk W.M. Jordan Co., of the 200,585-sq-ft, 199-key boutique hotel that includes a conference wing, main house and residence wing.

Extensive planning and some fortuitous timing helped The Inn at Darden project team deliver a much needed upgrade to the University of Virginia’s hospitality offerings.

Though W.M. Jordan Co. had no opportunity for preconstruction services or constructibility analysis on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Langley Research Center Measurement Systems Lab project, the team found ways to save millions of dollars while also enabling the agency to add scope to the project.

The company has experienced an increase in negotiated contracts for both construction management and design-bid-build delivery.
