Nearly 300 of the region’s top construction professionals attended ENR MidAtlantic’s annual Best Regional Project Awards lunch on Nov. 7 at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor.
Faced with economic and environmental uncertainties, the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) was challenged to adapt its 249 million gallons per day wastewater-treatment network to address and maintain reliable service to more than 1.7 million residents across southeast Virginia while safeguarding the region’s diminishing water supply and ecologically sensitive Chesapeake Bay.
Designed to substantially reduce combined sewer overflows to the waterways of the nation’s capital, the $240-million, 12,300-ft-long hydraulic tunnel traverses a route that includes varying subsurface conditions, fragile utility networks and above-ground environments ranging from rivers and parks to densely populated urban neighborhoods.
This 193,200-sq-ft high school is a fitting successor, the team says, to a locally cherished, historically significant facility that no longer supported the needs of contemporary education.
The circular 23,500-sq-ft child development center emphasizes sustainability in ways beyond its large windows, intricate landscaping and extensive use of natural interior finishes, the team says.
The project team says technology played a central role in the $68.3-million plan to construct five dual bridges within an 11-mile section of the planned 1,500-mile Continental 1 international trade corridor, connecting Canada with Florida.
