PCL Construction is soon to complete the $149-million 16th Street Mall makeover project in downtown Denver, part of a $937-million spending package to elevate infrastructure across the city.

The project broke ground in 2022 and is the first renovation of the 12-block-long pedestrian mall since it opened in 1982. Work includes removing the walkway between the two bus lanes to allow wider sidewalks, improving drainage and adding 220 trees.

Crews also are recreating the mile-long grid of red, black and gray granite pavers, key to the mall’s modernist I.M. Pei design.

Discovery of underground utilities and an active 1880s-era brick-lined sewer delayed completion, now scheduled for fall 2025.
