Hamakua Energy LLC is considering repowering its 60-MW natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant in Honoka’a, converting it to biomass-fired and constructing a battery energy storage system at the site. The project scope includes design and construction of biomass handling and processing facilities; retrofit or replacement of the boiler; and purchase and installation of battery storage units. It will have the capacity to store 7.5 MW of power. A construction schedule is being developed; project completion is expected in 2030. Hamakua Energy LLC is a subsidiary of Pacific Current.
