This eye-catching bridge is the newest addition to a 600-year-old street that connects urban and suburban areas in Beijing. The eight-lane, 55-m-wide structure also crosses Shougang Industrial Park, which for a century has been the center of China’s steel industry, but is now being transformed into the site of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The 1.3-km bridge incorporates shapes found both in nature and the city landscape. The project team established templates for future bridge work by implementing curved steel-plate application technology, whole-process digital design and digital manufacturing technology. The novel cable-stayed, rigid-structure composite system is composed of asymmetrically inclined and twisted steel towers and separated steel beams with variable sections. Two steel towers—one 124.5 m tall and the other 77 m—symbolize gates that connect the city with nature.

The project team included designers from China, Belgium and France, and suppliers from several other nations.
