NuScale Power has announced its first submittal to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for pre-licensing vendor design review of NuScale’s small modular reactor (SMR) design. The reactor maker’s submission is a combined Phase 1 and 2 level review. Three more submittals will be conducted at approximately six-month intervals to complete the process.

“Completion of the vendor design review provides assurance to both the regulator and potential customers that the NuScale design will be acceptable to build and operate in Canada,” said Tom Bergman, vice president of regulatory affairs.

NuScale has signed an agreement with Bruce Power to try to bring SMR technology to Canada. On Dec. 12, 2019, NuScale announced the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s completion of Phase 4 of the SMR design certification application. NRC is on track to issue its Final Safety Evaluation Report in September.
