The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a 20-year license extension for Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Units 3 and 4, making them the first nuclear plants approved to operate for 80 years. The Florida Power & Light units, south of Miami, can generate up to 2,503 MW of electricity. Unit 3’s renewed license expires July 19, 2052. Unit 4’s renewed license expires April 10, 2053. Environmental groups said the decision is short-sighted. “The NRC’s industry-friendly approval process needs an overhaul,” said Geoffrey Fettus, a Natural Resources Defense Council lawyer. “It’s absurd to push through a license extension more than a decade before the extension would even take effect, and for a plant along the vulnerable coast of Florida south of Miami. The NRC continues to put its head in the sand and ignore the risks that rising seas pose to this plant.”
