The 36-kilometer main link of the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway will soon span Kuwait Bay. Combined with a previously completed 13-km link to Doha, the causeway project encompasses more than 1.5 million cu meters of concrete, 250,000 tons of reinforcing steel and 12,000 foundation piles installed between 30 m and 84 m deep. A 177-m-long cable-stayed main span, punctuated by a 1,600-ton, 151-m-high steel and precast pylon, provides a navigation channel with 23 m of vertical clearance. South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and Construction worked with Combined Group Contracting of Kuwait to lead the design and construction team, which also included Dar Al-Handasah, T.Y. Lin International, SSH and design consultant Systra. Scheduled for completion in April 2019, the project reclaimed 1.5 million sq m of land for two ports and a main administration building/visitor center.
