To commemorate the CF Toronto Eaton Centre’s 40th anniversary, owner Cadillac Fairview replaced the shopping center’s pedestrian bridge. Connecting the modern rectangular geometry of CFTEC to the historical, circular arches of the Hudson’s Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue buildings, the 35-meter-long span—composed of 200 etched bronze panels and 355 curved glass panels—represents a “metaphorical handshake” connecting the differing styles. To meet the schedule and reduce the number of street closures, the project team opted to pre-assemble the 218-tonne bridge structure. Contractors used a 144-wheeled, self-propelled modular transport to lift the span into place for installation and tie-in.
