T
he Ohio Dept. of Transportation has awarded four emergency contracts worth a total of $833,000 for repairs to an Interstate 74 bridge that was struck on May 20 by a flatbed truck carrying a locomotive. John R. Jurgensen Co., Cincinnati, won a contract to remove the existing pier and design and install a temporary pier. Fredricktown, Ohio-based Kokosing Construction Co. will install a temporary crossover on I-74. The contract to rebuild the pier and remove the crossover was awarded on June 12 to Cincinnati-based Prus Construction Co. Brandon Collett, ODOT structures planning engineer, says the four-span bridge consisted of six lines of continuous steel-rolled beams with a noncomposite, reinforced concrete deck. He says the redundant steel beams, crossframes and reinforced-concrete deck helped redistribute the load, preventing collapse.
