One of the world’s largest bridges over a taxiway was fitted onto its pylons May 25 at the U.K.’s Gatwick airport. With a main span of 128 meters, the 197-m bridge was fabricated, then transported 1.5 kilometers between wheeled gantries and held aloft for a week while 22-m-tall splayed pylons were built into foundations. Weighing 2,400 tonnes, the enclosed bridge with a curved roof will allow Jumbo jets to pass. It was fabricated by Watson Steel Ltd., Bolton, and moved by Fagioli PSC Ltd., Iver. London-based Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Arup Group Ltd. designed it for airport operator BAA plc.
