FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. has purchased a replacement reactor head for its damaged Davis-Besse reactor from Consumers Energy, from the Midland reactor project that was stopped mid-construction in 1984, according to Platts Electric Power Daily Onliine. FENOC said that approach would let the 906-Mw Davis-Besse restart in the fourth quarter of 2002. The price of the reactor head isn't being disclosed. FENOC said the cost of the entire operation will be $55 million to $75 million. The $20-million range is related to the uncertain cost of transporting the head from the Midland site in Michigan to Davis-Besse. FENOC had preferred to repair the vessel head, which had a hole in its top from boric acid corrosion, but Nuclear Regulatory Commission experts have strongly indicated they found replacement a "cleaner" option than repair.
