With the signing of an agreement between St. Louis-based utility AmerenUE and Annapolis, Md.-based UniStar Nuclear, European nuclear technology has begun to extend its U.S. beachhead beyond UniStar member company Constellation Energy, Baltimore. UniStar Nuclear has agreed to help AmerenUE prepare a combined construction and operating license application for a site to be determined. Constellation and Areva Inc., Bethesda, Md., formed UniStar as a joint venture to develop and deploy powerplants using Areva’s U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor, a 1,600-MW American version of Areva’s Generation III+ pressurized-water European Power Reactor.
