HGA Wins 2011 SCUP Award
Visual and Performing Arts Village at Cabrillo College in Aptos

Part of a campus master plan, the Visual and Performing Arts Village raises the visibility of the Cabrillo College’s growing theater, music and visual arts programs, says HGA. Located across Soquel Drive from the original campus, the eight-acre Arts Village orients five architecturally compatible buildings around a series of courtyards, reinforcing a sense of campus community and promoting interdisciplinary interaction among students and faculty. The 126,000-sq-ft, pedestrian-oriented complex includes a Theater Arts Building with a proscenium theater and studio theater; Music Building with recital hall; 3-D Art Studio; 2-D Art Studio; and Arts Division Forum with lecture hall, seminar room and offices.

The jurors included Reed Kroloff, director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Collette Creppell, AIA, LEED AP, director of campus planning at Tulane University, New Orleans; Carl Elefante, FAIA, LEED AP, principal at Quinn Evans Architects, Washington, D.C.; Jennifer Jones, RLA, ASLA, principal with Carol R. Johnson Associates in Boston; David Lenox, AIA, university architect and director of campus planning and design at Stanford University, Palo Alto; Krisan Osterby, RLA, senior campus planner with Perkins+Will in Minneapolis; and Jim Richards, FASLA, co-founder and principal of TOWNSCAPE Inc., Texas.

The project team included HGA Architects and Engineers; Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, theater and audio visual consultant; Arup Acoustics, acoustical consultant; and Bogard+Kitchell, construction manager.
