Planning FLORIDA The Hillsborough Metropolitan Planning Organization voted unanimously to divert funds to build a $463-million connector road between Interstate 4 and the Selmon Crosstown Expressway in the Tampa Bay area. Florida Dept. of Transportation has stated it intends to apply some of its share of the state’s economic stimulus funds toward the project. ALABAMA Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. was awarded a contract by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to provide construction management services for a new medium- security federal correctional institution in Aliceville. The 45,000-sq-m facility will consist of one- and two-story buildings within a secure compound designed around a campus-style layout, and will have a rated capacity of 1,100 to 1,500 inmates. FLORIDA Johnson-Laux Construction will serve as general contractor on the City of Oviedo’s new public works administration building. The building will pursue LEED Gold certification, and its design incorporates a rainwater harvesting system on the roof for toilets and other graywater applications. Other items include waterless urinals, pervious concrete paving, daylighting systems and raised-access flooring. Johnson-Laux Construction has arrangements to recycle almost all of its construction debris through Waste Management’s LEED recycling program. The 5,300-sq-ft project is estimated at $1.9 million. ILLINOIS The Special Education District of Lake County in Gages Lake has selected IHC Construction as construction manager for its $22.5-million additions and renovations program. The program consists of the construction of the new $18.6-million Laremont-Ureche School at the Gages Lake campus. The contract also includes $3.9 million in renovations to the existing Gages Lake/Laremont School and Sally Potter School at the Mundelein campus for a combined build area of 74,000 sq ft. MARYLAND Clark Design/Build, a unit of Clark Construction Group, was selected as general contractor for the new $80-million Oakland Hall Dormitory at the University of Maryland’s College Park campus. The eight-story, 200,000-sq-ft cast-in-place concrete high-rise building will provide housing for 650 students. The project also calls for a new satellite central utility building to provide chilled water for the dormitory as well as several other existing campus buildings. The dormitory building will be designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with substantial completion expected by spring 2011. TEXAS All American Building Systems, a unit of Coachmen Industries, has received a letter of intent to build housing for the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss in a deal valued at $21.3-million. The order calls for a total of seven barracks buildings, to be prefabricated at the company’s factory and then transported to the site on tractor-trailers for siting and installation. VIRGINIA Clark Design/Build and Shirley Contracting Co., a unit and an affiliate of Clark Construction Group, have been awarded a $695-million contract to lead the design-build construction of the Dept. of Defense’s BRAC 133 Project in the Mark Center business park in Alexandria, Va. The project consists of a 16-acre office campus to be part of nearby Fort Belvior, and will provide 1.8 million sq ft of office space for the Dept. of Defense. The project includes a 15-story and a 17-story office tower with a connection at the tenth floor, as well as two parking garages, a visitor access control center and a remote inspection facility.
