This week we look at a locator rope for buried utilities from 3M and a tough smartphone from Caterpillar. Click to begin the slide show.
Product Snapshot: Utility Locator Rope and Ruggedized Smartphone

3Ms Electronic Marker System can be buried alongside utility installations, which can be easily located using radio-based detection units. Unlike locator wire that ceases to function once it is damaged, the EMS rope still can function after it is cut or broken. Durable plastic capsules embedded in the rope reflect radio signals generated by the Dynatel 7420 EMS Marker/Tape Locator, allowing for quick location of buried electrical, water and gas utilities. The EMS rope is available in a standard 200-lb tensile strength or a more rugged 500-lb tensile strength, which can be used in horizontal directional drilling applications.

The MEGA VX200 6-in. Vacuum Excavator is available with spoil-tank capacities ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 gallons, with a standard 800- gallon tank of fresh water. Designed for road contractors looking to clear and fill multiple potholes on a single trip, the vacuum has a 6-in. hose with a 3,200-cfm blower. A three-stage cyclonic filtration system allows for both wet and dry vacuum excavation. The seal on the spoil tank requires no additional clamping to secure it during transit, and all maintenance points are outside the tank. The machine is powered by a 200-hp Deere engine. The unit can be mounted on a new or repurposed truck chassis, thanks to its modular design.

The Metabo WPB18 LTX BL 150 Quick Angle Grinder features an electronic safety brake that can stop the wheel within two seconds. An electronic clutch reduces the risk of kickback when the grinder binds up. Built to work with Metabos LiHD 18-volt battery platform, the tool can perform high-demand tasks comparable to a corded angle grinder. The grinder wheels can be changed without the need for a separate tool, improving productivity.
