One of only 12 proton-therapy cancer centers nationwide, this facility is the first delivered using design-build. The team says the method enabled it to complete the $54-million project on time and under budget. The fortified two-story building is stocked with an array of high-tech medical, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Surrounding the equipment are concrete walls up to 21 ft thick to prevent stray radiation from escaping.

To ensure that every cu yd of concrete met the strict design density requirements, the project team devised a unique concrete-curing monitor system to use during all concrete pours. The project also features a healing garden and incorporates sustainable stormwater treatment and water-saving landscape elements.
