As the first full-service hospital built in the District of Columbia in more than 25 years, the 406,700-sq-ft facility aims to enhance care in underserved neighborhoods.
Clinical spaces support team-based care models, while dedicated areas for mental health and trauma care reflect a holistic approach to patient needs.
The facility is on track to become the first new full-service hospital in D.C. to achieve a minimum LEED Healthcare Silver certification.

The project team encountered several unique challenges during the design and construction phases, including buried elements from a previously demolished structure, proximity to historic buildings and contaminated soils that forced integration of seismic requirements.
Special auger cast piles were installed for hospital sections located close to a Metrorail station, eliminating any risks to the transit facility’s structural stability.
The team also worked quickly to adapt site designs to accommodate utility connections to a future offsite microgrid cogeneration plant.
