Progress on masonry bearing walls at the new Performing Arts Addition at Franklin High School in Livonia, MI. The construction manager on the project is the George W. Auch Company out of Pontiac, MI. The 22,000 S.F. addition consists of 50' high masonry bearing walls, fully grouted and internally braced. Picture was taken in late October 2015. Project will be complete September 2016.

The estimated $200 to $300 million project, which encompasses a 480,000 square-foot building to be built on a “hyper-track” schedule, is due for completion in the first quarter of 2009.
Plans call for eight floors of research laboratories in a tower atop a base platform that will include a vivarium, a 280-seat auditorium, a 100-seat seminar room, classrooms, 10,000 square feet of retail space for a restaurant and shops, and other common space, as well as three levels of underground parking. Co-Cathederal of the Sacred Heart
The Co-Cathederal will serve the 1.3 million Catholics in the 10-county area that comprises the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The archbishop has said he hopes the cathedral will be a place for large ecumenical and interfaith programs along with civic events that serve the entire community.
Forming the shape of a cross in the traditional manner of European cathedrals, the structure is cast-in-place concrete with columns to a height of 80 feet, covered by a steel-framed roof.
To avoid the nightmare of each subconsultant erecting their own scaffolding, the team invested $1 million and an entire year in erecting 78,000 square feet of multi-level scaffolding inside and outside the shell. Always staying well ahead of the scheduled simultaneous activities of the stonemasons, plasterers and caulkers, it was a tough job to accommodate the diverse height, width and weight requirements of the individual trades, while also complying with state and OSHA regulations. Different types of materials and verticals were used to fortify the scaffolding. The base width of the scaffold was increased to allow for 2,000 pounds per anchorage point with exterior scaffolding accommodating 150 pounds per square foot.
In order to apply plaster to the ceilings of the open interior space, two temporary wooden plank “dance floors” were built on top of interior scaffolds, one at 55 feet and another at 100 feet above the floor.

Bolu Mountain Motorway Viaduct (Turkey)
The viaduct is part of Ankara-Istanbul Motorway in Bolu. The picture was taken in June 2005 and all the motorway was inaugurated in January 2007. The deck is composed by steel (cortain) beams and concrete slab, With of each carriageway 27 m, and 80 m span. The General Contractor is Astaldi Spa and the project manager Mr. Dogan Demir.

Lincolnville Central School, Lincolnville, Maine
Designed and engineered by Oak Point Associates, constructed by Bowman Bros., the new Lincolnville Central School serves K-8 grades. As one of the State of Maine’s first “High Performance Schools”, emphasis was placed on the energy-efficient design of the building’s shell. The architect took advantage of the site’s southern exposure by employing clerestory windows, allowing natural light into interior spaces. Structural, insulated panels accelerated the pace of construction and provided a highly efficient building envelope. Completed September 2005.
Mount View School (K-12), Thorndike, Maine
Designed and engineered by Oak Point Associates, and currently being constructed by JCN Construction, the Mount View School is a new Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 facility that will replace an existing early-1960's school located on the same site. The existing building is deteriorating, and nine portable classroom buildings on the site are testament to the fact that the population has outgrown its facility. Although the new building was initially designated as a high school-only facility, a regional analysis of the district showed that replacement of the entire K-12 school was warranted. Currently the Elementary School (K-6) serves the local population, while the Junior High and High Schools serve the entire district. At 330 square miles, it is the largest school district in the State of Maine. It is a challenge to create three schools within a single building, which must share several core services while remaining autonomous. The Elementary and Middle Schools will share a cafeteria and a gymnasium. The High School will have its own cafeteria and gymnasium, but share a library with the Middle School. Both cafeterias, separated from each other by a movable sound wall, will share one kitchen. This will allow the space to be opened up for large community functions. There will be one auditorium that will be shared among all students. The classroom wings are separate from these core program spaces so that they can be locked, while after-hours access to the core spaces is still possible. Anticipated completion date is August 2009.

New Academic Building at Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
DMR designed a new 32,000 SF new academic building to be situated in a prominent location on the main campus. The building will include general classrooms, computer labs, faculty offices, student and staff lounges, a college-wide conference room and storage areas. The project is currently out to bid and construction completion is estimated for September of 2009.
Montclair Transit Village, Montclair, NJ
Working with the Developer Lincoln Property Company, DMR Architects designed a transit- oriented development directly next to the existing Pine/Bay Street Train Station that provides direct service to Manhattan. In place of an existing NJ Transit surface parking lot, DMR and LPC designed a residential complex consisting of a shared (permit holder and daily commuter only) transit parking garage and a 165-luxury apartment residential apartment building. The residential complex includes exterior courtyards, a swimming pool, an internet cafe, a day care center, a club (common area for residents to use), and covered parking (seperate from the NJ Transit parking garage). The garage was completed in 2007 and the residential building has an anticipated completion of late 2008.
One of the anticipated successes of the project is to eliminate the resident's need to use a vehicle. Residents will have acccess to the on-site amenities including the train service to NYC, as well as the convenience of being within walking distance to downtown Montclair's shops and restaurants.
Pre-K - 8 Public School, Carlstadt, NJ
Located on Washington Street, in a low-rise residential neighborhood, the new Carlstadt Public School was a significant departure for this district school system which had previously occupied three seperate buildings around the neighborhood.
The program goal for the client was to create a new state-of-the-art school to serve all the students in Carlstadt, grades Pre-K to 8. This site was determined to be the best fit for the new school with its six acre site complete with outdoor athletic activity, previously enjoyed only by one of the district's schools. The new school serves as a focal point for the entire community.
The Carlstadt Public School has been awarded LEED® Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is USGBC's leading edge system for designing and constructing the world's greenest, energy efficient, high performing buildings. Carlstadt Public School is the first Pre-K - 8 public school in New Jersey and the first building in Bergen County, NJ to achieve LEED certification. Carlstadt Public School received a total of 36 LEED points (33 are required) for Silver Certification.
Meadowlands Train Station, East Rutherford, NJ
DMR Architects designed the new train station at the Meadowlands as part of the Edwards and Kelcey team for the Meadowlands Railroad and Roadway Improvement project. This project has been commissioned by the Governor of New Jersey, in order to bring rail service to the Meadowlands Complex. The Complex, a world-class facility comprised of the Racetrack, Giants Stadium, and the Izod Center, is currently serviced by bus and vehicular access only.
Designed to be clean, attractive and highly functional, establishing a safe
environment where pedestrian access is safe, convenient and comfortable, the Meadowlands Station is a Destination Station. With the development of this new station, the Meadowlands will be in position to serve the New York and New Jersey population and accommodate for future growth in the region.

McKenzie River Bridge
While replacing one of the 365 bridges in the Oregon Department of Transportation’s OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program, crew members drill piling shafts for this McKenzie River bridge. Minimizing the impact of construction on the environment is a primary goal of ODOT’s bridge program. To avoid disturbing fish and other creatures that live in the McKenzie River, the crew used a “bubble curtain” to mitigate the sound waves caused by the drilling. This highway bridge is part of Bundle 215. I-5: McKenzie River (Spores) to Goshen Grade in Eugene, Ore. Construction on this $69,831,000 project is scheduled to be complete in November 2009. David Evans & Associates Inc. is the primary architect, and Hamilton Construction Co. is the primary general contractor.
Salem, Ore. I-5 bridge
Specialized hydraulic cranes demolish an Interstate 5 bridge in Salem, Ore., on a Bundle 212: I-5: North Santiam to Keubler Boulevard project site. This construction is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program, which is repairing or replacing 365 highway bridges throughout Oregon over a 10-year period. Hamilton Construction Co. is the primary general contractor of this $70,028,000 project that is expected to be complete in July 2008.
Chemult, Ore. U.S. 26 bridge
Workers on a Bundle 101: Mt. Hood to Chemult project site prepare a large prestressed, precast concrete beam for placement on a U.S. 26 highway bridge. This construction is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program’s efforts to repair or replace 365 bridges across the state. Several of these huge beams were used on the project; each is 162.5 feet long and 7 feet tall and weighs 135,000 pounds. These beams were the longest precast concrete beams ever constructed and used in Oregon. A single beam contains more than a mile of rebar and two miles of prestressing strand. Completed in June 2006, this $34,952 project’s primary architect was David Evans & Associates Inc., and the primary general contractor was Wildish Standard Paving.
River Drive overpass
Crews demolish the River Drive overpass on Interstate 5 in Cottage Grove, Ore., on a Bundle A02: I-5: Clarks Branch to Tunnel Mill Race project site. Afterward, crew members cleaned and crushed the concrete and stripped the rebar with an excavator. Rubble from the project was transported for reuse to another project site of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program. By working with other independent contractors to exchange the aggregate free of charge, ODOT contractor CH2M Hill saved approximately $360,000 by avoiding the cost of transporting the rubble to a third-party facility for recycling. This exchange is an example of how ODOT is meeting its goal to deliver projects cost effectively and efficiently. The total cost for this project was $43,658,000, and the construction was completed in May 2007.
Chemult, Ore. U.S. 26 bridge

Launched in 2003, the 10-year bridge program will sustain approximately 2,500 jobs annually during its duration and to date has generated more than $423 million in income. David Evans & Associates Inc. was the primary architect for this $34,952 construction project that finished in June 2006. Wildish Standard Paving was the project’s primary general contractor.

The job was for a micro tunnel under 15’ under the Rock River and the shafts were 45’ deep. Griffin was working 4 feet under the flood plain levels behind a port-a-dam.

Griffin Dewatering Southeast, LLC was honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2006 OPAL (Outstanding Projects and Leaders) awards. Griffin was recognized for it’s contribution and work, along with SCE&G, PCR, Barnard Construction Co., Inc. and Kleinfelder, on the Saluda Dam Remediation Project in Columbia South Carolina. The project was a significant undertaking. In addition to keeping the 202km2 hydroelectric reservoir, rimmed with businesses and houses, nearly full and keep a hydroelectric plant and coal fired steam plant operational, while also ensuring the safety of the 120,000 residents living in the flood plain near Columbia, SC, there were also environmental concerns regarding the wetlands encircling Saluda Dam.

Situated on 2,847 acres and surrounded by the rolling green hills and dense forests of the Texas Hill Country, the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa is on deck to become one of the Southwest’s premier destination resorts. Scheduled to open in spring 2010, one of the resort’s biggest draws will be the expansive, native-to-Texas outdoor recreation and water features, which are being designed by TBG, Texas’ largest landscape architecture and planning firm.
Encompassing six acres of the resort is the Hill Country River Experience, which involves a 1,100-foot lazy river that meanders though lush landscaping of native trees and brilliant flowers, and Pedernales Falls, a thrilling, fast-moving 630-foot river ride that will begin at the top of a natural bluff and cut into native rock, quickly turning into an action river ride with rapids and swirling eddies, eventually throwing guests into the lazy river.
In addition, an exhilarating 315-foot water slide will toss guests and their tubes into a catch pool. Two children’s pools with water fountain splash areas will be integrated as well, connected by a 30-foot tower that resembles an authentic Texas railroad trestle, where kids can glide down fiberglass water slides. The children’s pools will also be the home to other fun activities for kids, including water cannons, floating animals and splash toys.
“The most important design element is maintaining the charming mix of old-fashioned Texas hospitality with all the amenities and activities you’d expect in a world-class luxury resort,” said Jim Manskey, Principal with TBG Partners. “We didn’t want to design a water park that looks like something you’d see at Epcot. We wanted it to be true to the Texas Hill Country and its rugged topography. The lazy river, for example, will be recessed in the ground by four to five feet, lined with limestone rock outcroppings, just like any river in the Hill Country. Basically, every feature in the resort is being designed to blend in with the area’s rolling hills and native vegetation.”
Other features designed by TBG include a serene infinity-edge adult pool, which will be located on a bluff overlooking the golf courses, hot and cold plunge pools, cascading waterfalls, whirlpools and a grand “active” pool, which will serve as the centerpiece of the resort’s activity area. The water features were all orchestrated to create a true Texas experience and designed to appeal to all demographics - honeymooners, families with kids, outdoor enthusiasts and business travelers who shun the idea of all work and no play.
TBG is including three distinctive outdoor catering venues in its design, which will be ideal for weddings, receptions and other events. The resort will also feature two 18-hole Tournament Players Clubs golf courses, designed by two of the most respected forces in the golf industry – Pete Dye and Greg Norman. A bird sanctuary will be adjacent to the north course, which will serve as the gateway to rugged nature trails, where guests can intimately experience the natural beauty of the resort.
TBG’s landscape for the resort will include native grasses and plants, towering pecan, cedar and oak trees, crystal clear streams, healing waters, rolling hills, wide-open spaces and rustic materials such as limestone and hardwood, all of which complement the area’s diverse terrain. TBG is also working with HKS Architects, the architecture firm designing the hotel itself, to ensure that guest rooms have ideal views of the resort, surrounding water features, golf courses, the wooded hills of the bird sanctuary and/or indigenous natural landscape.
In addition to the outdoor recreation and water features, the resort will offer 1,002 spacious guestrooms, more than 140,000 square feet of customizable indoor space, four restaurants, a multi-media sports bar and boutique shopping. It will also have a 26,000-square-foot rejuvenation spa that sits 20 feet above the rest of the resort, providing impeccable views of the landscape below. The spa will be home to 30 treatment rooms, its own pool, Jacuzzi, private cabanas and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa will be located in northeast Bexar County, just 20 minutes from downtown San Antonio and the San Antonio International Airport, nestled in the foothills of San Antonio’s storied Hill Country and Cibolo Canyons.
The resort is being developed by Miller Global Properties, with Marriott International as the operator. Noble Development Group is serving as the Project Manager. Additional consultants to TBG and HKS Inc. include ForrestPerkins as the interior designer, Lang Lighting Design, Water Technologies Inc. as aquatics consultant / contractor and Austin Commercial as the general contractor.

As it later turned out peak flow was miscalculated by the customer and it was necessary to increase the number of pumping units. Griffin Dewatering Southwest signed a contract with Linbeck Construction. The project (CRC Rice University) consists of a ten story building next to the Rice University Campus inside of Houston Medical Center. Griffin installed a 1400 linear foot eductor system to lower the groundwater below the deepest cut. (40 feet deep from the street level) These eductors are 65 to 80 feet deep and drilled outside the excavation area along the property line. The eductor system with two pump stations has lowered groundwater more than 5 feet below the deepest excavation. At the time of this photo, Linbeck Construction was pouring the footing and setting the foundation in a dry and safe condition inside a 40 foot deep hole in Houston Medical Center. As a part of the contract with Linbeck, Griffin will drill and install 56 permanent relief wells on the third basement of the building to permanently control the groundwater below another high-rise in the Houston Medical Center.

Bucket Drilling
The bucket rig is a form of the rotary drill rig. It uses mechanical or hydraulic drive to rotate a Kelly which is attached to the bucket. This type of rig will normally utilize a square friction type or round locking type Kelly with three or four telescoping sections which can extend to 100ft or more. Bucket rigs may be equipped to drill holes from 10 to 60 inches in diameter. Bucket drilling uses a cylindrical bucket with cutting blades or teeth mounted on a hinged bottom to repeatedly cut and lift sediments from the borehole.
To drill, the bucket is rotated to allow the bottom of the cutting teeth to fill the bucket. When the bucket is full, it is raised by cable. Flaps at the bottom of the bucket will close to keep the soils (spoils) inside the bucket. The bottom of the bucket, which is hinged, is opened to allow the soils to dump into the spoil pile. The bottom of the bucket is closed, the bucket is reinserted into the hole, and the process is repeated as necessary to achieve the proper borehole depth.
For drilling with the bucket rig, groundwater must be at least 8-10ft below existing grade or the drill rig needs to be ramped up to achieve 8-10ft of head, which in some cases may require a surface casing. Water or biodegradable drilling fluids such as Revert, Guar Gum, or other synthetic polymers are added as needed to keep the borehole open during the drilling process. This is in lieu of large mixing/separation pits or tanks typical of other methods of drilling (i.e. reverse rotary).
The combination of the drilling fluid and the side cutting teeth producing an oversized borehole along with the fact that the drill cuttings are removed via the drill bucket, produces a well that is not smeared with the annulus of the borehole or drilling fluid, with suspended solids that could “cake” or produce lower yielding water wells. This makes the bucket drilling method a viable option in a variety of soil conditions. Over the years it has been a proven method for installing dewatering systems in the stratified soils found in the Houston region as well as other soil conditions found throughout the country.

In open sump pumping, hydraulic submersible pumps are a good choice due to the high volume and high head capability. The lighter weight over conventional electric submersible pumps allow for easier placement in sumps. For heavy sludge materials such as drilling muds, the material handling hydraulic submersible pump is very good at overcoming the flow resistance and transferring the fluid. A good example is where casings are being drilled and the hole is stabilized with drilling mud. The pump can be used to transfer the drilling mud into the hole from the tank, and then used in the hole to circulate the mud, and then transfer back to the solids control equipment.

Griffin was hired to provide a workable dewatering plan to facilitate the “facelift” of a swanky mall in Palm Beach — all while maintaining a low profile to accommodate everyday mall business.

Whiting-Turner General Contractors hired Griffin Dewatering to provide a workable dewatering plan to facilitate the demolition of old, construction of new and maintain a “low profile” to accommodate everyday mall business. Challenges on this job included the dewatering process had to be environmentally compatible so as not to disturb daily business of the neighboring stores and eateries, limited locations for disposal of dewatering effluent, in addition to working only at night and after hours. Griffin installed a 300’ long x 6” I.D. discharge line under the existing floor slab (tile was cut and replaced), through a service corridor and into an outside service area where a 2,500 gallon weir type settling tank aerated the groundwater prior to its disposal into the onsite drainage system. A Griffin electric wellpoint pump was placed inside the mall (transported through service corridors), the motor size worked with the available three phase power and the General Contractor installed a flexible steel exhaust line to the adjacent ceiling fans to vent any water vapor or groundwater odor. Our shifts started @ 9:30 PM and concluded @ 6:00 AM.

Description of System - A wellpoint trench series with deep, shallow, and vapor wellpoints, recovers the hydrocarbon contaminated water and soil vapors. The liquid is pumped through an oil/water separator and automated transfer tank, into the bioreactor for treatment. The treated goundwater is then pumped into liquid carbon units for polishing and discharged into the local sewer system. After the soil vapors are removed from the ground, they proceed through a knockout tank into a catalytic oxidizer for complete hydrocarbon destruction.

THE CRIBSTONE BRIDGE
Currently undergoing reconstruction to repair sheered and cracked stone, this historic bridge boasts 10,000 ton of granite slabs. At 1,150 feet, it is the only one of it's kind. By using granite slabs, it allowed the tides to ebb and flow freely. The repair project began in March of 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Installation of the dewatering system to bypass the Galena River for a new bridge construction. The 6” high pressure pump was used to sump out the jet water. Being environmentally friendly, some stray fish were trapped inside the cofferdam and were “hand” removed. The construction worker shown is looking for fish.

The 24” Tee was used with the polyethylene sheeting to help erosion control by difussing the discharge flow impact. Estimated flows were 15,000GPM (gallons per minute). The river is being bypassed for a new railroad bridge being built across the river.

Non-clog pumps in Iowa on a Sewer Rehab project after heavy snowfall during the Winter of 2009
The project is replacing a siphon sewer under the Iowa River. Griffin is bypassing the sewage from the old structures while the new sewer connections are made. Total volume is about 6,300 gallons per minute. Total duration of the job is 2 weeks from startup to shut down of the new 18 inch non-clog pumps. Griffin is bypassing sewage from 3 different locations on site, 2 operate at any one time.

In deliberate contrast to the traditional, cubic exterior, Nadel Architects designed a curvilinear, sky-lit atrium in The Galleria. The atrium's kidney shape will help it to function as two courts in one, balancing constructability and maximum leasing space with visual interest. When complete, the building mass will appear to "erode," with meandering walkways through the atrium as if the naturally fluid pedestrian paths wore down the buildings like water erodes rock.

Temporary Pump Station Keeps Water Flowing
Photo of fifteen 24 inch and two 36 inch axial flow pumps designed and installed by Griffin Dewatering in California. The 36-inch pumps were mounted on two 20-foot long, 8-foot wide and 16-foot high prefabricated platforms that were set on the lake bottom. The 36-inch discharge lines ran 30 feet over water and rested on the canal spillway. Access was made possible by way of a 30-foot catwalk. The 24 inch Griffin Axial Flow pumps were installed using prefabricated discharge piping. The discharge was made of 26 inch pipe in the shop and shipped to the jobsite in two pieces. These sections were welded together on the jobsite. The pump and discharge weighed 4500 lbs. including hydraulic lines. Lifting cables were attached at a balance point and left in place during operation. (Removal and reconnection would have had to been done underwater). The by-pass system was fueled by a 12,000 gallon fuel tank installed in a lined berm area 10 feet above the water surface. Both the fuel line from the tank and return lines to the tank were constructed with 2 inch and 1 inch steel pipes, respectively.

To accomplish this project, Griffin outfitted the temporary pump station with fifteen 24 inch axial flow pumps and two 36 inch Diesel Driven mixed flow pumps. Griffin's 24AX Hydraulic Submersible Pumps are each capable of pumping 20,000gpm (gallons per minute). The project was on Lake Isabella in the Desert Mountains above Bakersfield, California.

Griffin Hydraulic Submersible Pumps on Lake Isabella By-pass system
Axial flow pumps on Lake Isabella located high in the desert mountains above Bakersfield, California and the San Joaquin Valley. Fed by the Kern River, the lake is a primary source of water for farmers in the southern part of the largest agricultural area in California. Griffin Dewatering Corporation was called in to design, construct, and operate a temporary pump station that would run for five months. The station was capable of pumping 200,000 gallons per minute (gpm) with a standby capacity of 30,000 gpm. The quantity the station actually pumped was dependent upon the demand downstream.

The Mixing Vault on the Alameda Corridor project consisted of a below grade concrete sump into which the groundwater was pumped from the dewatering wells. The majority of the railway was below street grade, most of which required dewatering as the high ground water table in the area would not allow the construction to be achieved.

The mixing vault shown consisted of a below grade concrete sump into which the groundwater was pumped from the dewatering wells. A metering pump dispensed the neutralizing agent into the effluent based on incoming flows. Installed into the vault were three 12” Hydraulic Driven Submersible Pumps (Griffin Model 12T Submersible Pumps with 825 Power Units). These pumps would then pump the treated groundwater to a receiving point approximately one mile away.

The methane shooting up from the PVC pipe indicates a successfully installed methane extraction well by Griffin. The crew constructed and installed 24 methane gas extraction wells made of 8” PVC pipe at depths ranging from 60-99ft in depth. The extraction wells were tied into the landfill’s existing system by means of 4” HDPE pipe buried in the topsoil.

The project consists of repair to two anomalies on an existing 16” pipeline with the potential of a third location. The first two locations are 300’+/- between each other. One site measures 40’ x 40’ x 8’ deep and the other site is 60’ x 40’ x 8’ deep. The water table is approximately 5’-6’ below grade surface (bgs). The pipeline is going thru a tank farm that is not the pipelines. All of the header pipe and pump have to be outside the tank farm property. The discharge point is inside the tank farm property inside an existing dike wall. A dewatering bag has to be at the end of the discharge.
On weekends and after 5:00 PM the tank farm is closed and nobody is allowed inside the property. Local union regulations require a person to man the pump around the clock as long as the pumping is needed.
Griffin’s solution was to install the pump and header pipe outside the fence line, run the discharge under the fence over the dike wall and into the dewatering bag. Snap-on wickpoints were hand jetted to the clay layer at 12’-13’ bgs. Wickpoints were placed on 8’ centers around the entire perimeter of the two excavations. The pump was placed at the mid-point between the two excavations. Being environmentally sensitive, Griffin installed containment tarps under the pump and the double containment remote fuel tank. Enclosure units were placed over both the pump and fuel tank.
Wickpoints were bundled together and ran from around the excavations thru the fence and connected to the header pipe. Wickpoints can be placed in many jobsites where tradtional wellpoints are not practical.

Griffin's wickpoint system is a "greener" 21st century version of the classic 75 year old dewatering method known as the wellpoint system. New wick points with geo-textile filter screening can produce a more efficient and economical dewatering system. The wickpoint method also produces cleaner discharge water from the jobsite versus the conventional wellpoint system. It also reduces or eliminates subsidence and settlement problems. Due to rising lake elevations in Devils Lake the highways in the area are under constant attack from high winds/waves. This picture was taken on May 31, 2011 and is of a grader clearing riprap and debris off of ND Hwy 20/57. The highway was eventually closed because as you can see it was very dangerous to travel on this highway. This picture shows how fitting a name like Devils Lake is for this body of water.

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. - Meeting tough national standards for durable, "green" construction, Miller Construction Co. is building a 25,000-square-foot Ashley Furniture HomeStore at 3775 N. Federal Highway, Oakland Park.
The latest addition to the Fort Lauderdale area's Furniture Row, the store is scheduled to open in early 2013, according to Miller Construction Co. President Harley Miller. "The store's upscale finishes, lighting and displays will catch consumers' attention, but they're less likely to notice the high-performing features of the building itself," he said.
For owner City Furniture, which is Ashley Furniture HomeStore's South Florida licensee, Miller Construction Co. is building the new store to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Miller said the firm's expert LEED construction team is focused on maximizing the store's environmentally friendly potential -- from conserving energy and water, to incorporating regionally-sourced materials and recycling 75 percent of construction waste.
The store is also being built to satisfy stringent loss prevention engineering standards of property insurance giant FM Global, which go well beyond code requirements. Miller Construction Co. brings experience in meeting FM Global's structural standards, which work to protect assets and minimize the potential for losses.
"From our people and products to the stores themselves, taking extra care to build real and enduring value is in our company's DNA," said City Furniture President Keith Koenig. "Miller's team takes the same approach, with the expertise to build in lasting value. We expect to realize ongoing savings through efficient energy and water use and lower insurance costs."
This is the 13th retail facility Miller has built or renovated for the furniture retailer throughout southeast and southwest Florida.
The new Ashley Furniture HomeStore at the corner of North Federal Highway and NE 38 Street is one of five stores City Furniture is building or renovating throughout the Tri-County area. All are being built to achieve LEED certification, and will include green features such as expanses of low-emitting glass, super-high-efficiency air conditioning system and reflective roof coating. More than 90 percent of the Oakland Park store's hundreds of light bulbs will be energy-conserving LED bulbs, and the all-concrete parking lot will absorb less heat than a conventional asphalt lot.
Inside the store, upscale -- but energy friendly -- features include a stone tower with a water-wall and an architectural trellis.

Brasfield & Gorrie has topped out construction on the Omni Nashville Hotel and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum expansion project located in downtown Nashville. Designed to be a genuine expression of Nashville’s vibrant country music culture, the 1.4 million sq ft facility includes the 800-key Omni Hotel and a 225,000 sq ft expansion to the Country Music Hall of Fame, an existing Nashville landmark. Brasfield & Gorrie began construction of the multistory hotel in June 2011, and grand opening activities are slated for fall 2013.
“Amidst the current economic recovery period, business professionals are on the road more than ever before, resulting in a demand for luxury hotels that offer equal parts business and leisure,” said Rob Blalock, Vice President and Division Manager with Brasfield & Gorrie. “With Nashville at the center of this movement, hospitality leaders continue to find new and innovative ways to drive convention traffic to the area. Built featuring natural materials, exposed steel, and regional limestone, the hotel is expected to meet LEED Silver New Construction standards.

In a joint venture partnership, The Lemoine Company and Brasfield & Gorrie recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the South End Zone Expansion of LSU’s Tiger Stadium. The expansion is scheduled to be completed for the kickoff of the 2014 football season and will increase the overall seating capacity to nearly 100,000. The project will be constructed for the Tiger Athletic Foundation (TAF).
The project will add an upper deck to the south end zone, including 68 skyboxes, seating for approximately 3,000 in the stadium club, and approximately 1,500 upper deck seats. The upper level of the expansion will provide increased access for fans and the addition of a standing room-only section.
The addition will make Tiger Stadium the seventh largest stadium in the nation and the third largest in the Southeastern Conference.
This project is one of several collaborative ventures between Brasfield & Gorrie and The Lemoine Company over the past decade.
HKS, Inc., the project architect, was the designer of the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium as well as Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and many other notable sports and entertainment venues.

Steve Moore to Lead RS&H Aerospace & Defense Practice
RS&H, Inc., one of the leading architecture, engineering and consulting firms in the nation, announced that Steven Moore, PE, will become its Aerospace & Defense Practice Director effective March 31, 2014. He will take over for Dr. Wayne Finger, who will retire from RS&H after 32 years of service.
Moore previously served as the Aerospace & Defense Operations Manager for RS&H, which he joined in 2000.
“Steve’s leadership and experience have been key factors in the success of our Aerospace & Defense Practice,” said Brian Reed, CEO of RS&H. “He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to grow the practice as the aerospace and defense industries continue to transform the way they execute their missions.”
Moore takes over RS&H’s most storied practice, one that dates back to the early days of NASA and space exploration. During Finger’s tenure, the Aerospace & Defense Practice grew to eight offices in six states, increased its staff, originated new business lines, and was a strong business unit each year. Finger will continue to support RS&H in an advisory and client relations role.
Moore holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Structures and Foundations. He began his career working as an engineer for a base support contractor for the US Air Force before going on to Lockheed Martin’s rocket program, then joining RS&H.

The development of a crack in a spillway of Wanapum Dam, downstream of Rock Island Dam necessitated a 25 foot drawdown of the tailrace. This created a significant obstacle for the fish migrating upstream; they would not have access to the original fish ladder. With the arrival of the migrating salmon just a few months away, this project took on a critical path very quickly.

Stevens & Wilkinson, a full-service commercial architecture, engineering and interior design firm based in Atlanta and Columbia, S.C., announced the completion of Liberty Plaza, an outdoor civic space that expands Capitol Hill’s grounds across Capitol Avenue for public use. The announcement follows the January 12 inauguration of Governor Nathan Deal, who supported the development of the plaza. A dedication of the new space took place at Liberty Plaza, Friday, January 16 at 12:30pm.
Stevens & Wilkinson was selected by the Georgia Building Authority (GBA) and the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission (GSFIC) to recreate Liberty Plaza as a gathering place for celebrations, ceremonies and assemblies for both lawmakers and citizens. In conjunction with landscape architecture firm Hughes Good O’Leary Ryan (HGOR) and civil engineering firm Long Engineering, Stevens & Wilkinson provided full design services including the demolition of a parking deck, the creation of the plaza and an addition of strategic entryways to enhance connectivity.
“We are pleased to have been chosen to redesign this significant public and civic space, and look forward to joining the community in celebrating the official introduction of the site at the dedication ceremony,” said Bill Clark, AIA, LEED AP, president of Stevens & Wilkinson Atlanta.
According to the GBA, Liberty Plaza will become the major focal point for large and small groups holding public rallies and assemblages both during and between legislative sessions. In keeping with this vision, Stevens & Wilkinson designed Liberty Plaza’s entrances with large crowds in mind, and the plaza itself can hold more than 3,400 people.
Stevens & Wilkinson designed Liberty Plaza with safety and security in mind. The plaza can be secured with gates and fencing, and will be continuously monitored by surveillance cameras.
Upon demolishing the parking deck that formerly occupied the site of Liberty Plaza, Stevens & Wilkinson incorporated a recycling and reuse strategy. All steel from the former structure was recycled, and concrete was reused as backfill material.
“Our team of architects and engineers implemented smart design solutions to ensure the plaza is beautiful, sustainable and accessible for large numbers of citizens,” said Clark.
Liberty Plaza is strategically located within walking distance of public parking and Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) stations and bus stops. Stevens & Wilkinson and HGOR incorporated sidewalks, street trees an accessible ramp connecting to an overhead pedestrian bridge for increased walkability.
In order to promote Georgia’s rich history, the design team included installations of relocated public art. Georgia-harvested granite and a native Georgia plant palette were chosen for the design to promote the state’s natural resources and work in aesthetic concert with neighboring state government buildings.

Dogs Just Wanna Have Fun at Mayhood Park
The Stantec-designed park provides a much needed recreational and social amenity for both pets and their owners within the central part of the City and surrounding areas.
Encompassing nearly seven acres on a former mobile home site surrounded by well-established residential neighborhoods, the City of Bonita Springs has built its first City dog park. A key project for the City of Bonita Springs Parks and Recreation Department and the city’s residents, the site is part of a larger property acquired by the City along the heavily travelled East Terry Street corridor, and flanking both sides of the impaired Leitner Creek waterway.
The dog park is now open, and providing many opportunities for fun.

Stantec’s Analysis of Charleston’s I-526 Corridor Earns Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC-SC
Stantec’s I-526 Corridor Analysis project has received an Engineering Excellence Award in the Studies, Research and Consulting Category from the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC). The award recognizes Stantec for its ability to identify resolutions for current congestion issues while addressing future needs to maintain I-526 as an efficient and viable transportation link.
The nine-mile I-526 corridor between Rivers Avenue and US 17, including the I-26 & I-526 system-to-system interchange, was experiencing considerable congestion during the weekday AM and PM peak periods as well as higher than average collisions due to problematic weaving sections. Future traffic volumes were expected to increase considerably with several large developments planned in the area
Stantec’s team conducted a study of existing conditions and created a development of the VISSIM microsimulation traffic model. Multiple concepts were developed for all interchanges in the study area. Options were presented as a menu of potential improvement projects based on cost, which build upon each other and will include a combination of various improvement alternatives.
Michael Dennis, PE, technical applications engineer for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) said of the study, “We were pleased with (Stantec’s) innovative study methods, the extensive coordination with local agencies, and the ability to use the recommendations to directly program improvements when funds became available.” Dennis is happy with the project. “It covered new ground in developing a corridor plan that in the past has not been done; Stantec served as a vital partner in this process.”
The ACEC-SC judged Stantec’s I-526 corridor analysis based on uniqueness and innovative applications; future value to the engineering profession; perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs, including schedule and budget.

Relaxed Mediterranean meets California Coastal inspired architecture provides the backdrop for 140,000 square feet of retail and office space, 59,000 square feet of restaurant space and 1,043 stalls of on-grade and two levels of subterranean parking.

It’s starting to feel a lot like Xmas...in March?
During the tail end of a storm that hit Southern California the week of March 2, a dusting of what appeared to be snow covered Huntington Beach. Later confirmed as hail, the layer of an unfamiliar white substance blanketed the Pacific City project creating a “winter wonderland” on this jobsite located just across the street from the Pacific Ocean.
Flanked by Pacific Coast Highway and panoramic ocean views, Pacific City was designed to create a retail, dining and hospitality destination for Huntington Beach locals and visitors alike. Relaxed Mediterranean meets California Coastal inspired architecture provides the backdrop for 140,000 square feet of retail and office space, 59,000 square feet of restaurant space and 1,043 stalls of on-grade and two levels of subterranean parking.

Feyen Zylstra Shooting Stars
The Shooting Stars chandelier at 25 Ottawa in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a customized fixture from Yellow Goat. This fixture is the showpiece for the main entrance of the building. The fixture base is 6’11” squared and was shipped as two individual pieces. Each piece houses four individual LED down lights that light up suspended glass beads. Our very own Kurt Huizenga led a crew of four Feyen Zylstra employees and a pulley system to get the fixture into position atop a scaffold where the entire base was supported by 16 threaded rods, 24’ above street level! Once in position, 180 individual steel cables, of different lengths, were hung one at a time. Once the cables were in place, the intertwining metal rods and glass beads were put into position. The fixtures sheer size, elevation, and near 300 individual pieces were just a handful of challenges to the 60 hours it took to install!

Poseidon Barge presented Veit with the P10 barges as the best option for the US Highway 53 relocation project. The P10 barges are available in two sizes: 44x11x10 feet (weighing 45,500 pounds) and 22x11x10 feet (weighing 24,850 pounds). Utilizing the P10’s rather than standard 40x10x7 feet barges reduced the number of barges by nearly 40 percent overall. This kept rental and freight costs lower to the customer. The P10’s were placed in the water and assembled quickly and with ease. 60- foot spuds and pockets were added to the platform, and a Poseidon 110HP Double Drum Winch to complete the set-up.

They had basic ideas on how they wanted to set up our barges and use them for different aspects of the project. We worked with their estimating department and quoted them several different platforms for the various equipment that would go on each platforms. They needed a platform for a Bauer Drill Rig (weight: 358,000 lbs.) , a Manitowoc 2250 crane (weight: 650,000 lbs.) and also a material barge to hold the casing pipe that was 90’ x 10’ and weighs 90,000 pounds. After the project was awarded back in 2013 we continued working with the engineers and project managers to firm up each of the 3 barge configurations to insure a successful project.

The platform was constructed using the Poseidon P10 Portable Sectional Barges, first introduced at Con-Expo in March of 2014. The platform consists of 23 – P10 44’ x 11’ x 10’ sections and 8 – 22’ x 11’ x 10’ sections. The platform was assembled 4 miles south of the project site. Chicago Steel used a Manitowoc 2250 crane to offload the sections from the truck and set them into the water. A crew of three men assembled the barges in the water. After staging the barges on land and blocking the female pins in the up position, the crew was able to assemble 5 – 44’ units and 2 – 22’ units in a 22’ x 132’ configuration in two hours.
