A M King, an integrated Design-Build firm, has begun construction of a South Texas distribution center for Mexico-based GAB Operations, LLC (GAB). The new 45,590-square-foot facility, will provide increased cold storage capacity for fresh produce and will serve as a hub for the company’s U.S. and Canadian customers. The distribution center will be located in the Pinnacle Industry Center, just minutes from the Rio Grande River and Laredo International Airport. Completion is set for October 2021.

The City of Houston selected civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to design a new sewer line that will divert wastewater from the Imperial Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Northgate Regional Lift Station. This project will decommission the 4 million gallons a day (MGD) Imperial Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant. The $30 million project consists of approximately 13,000 linear feet of 36-inch sanitary sewer line that will divert more than 9 MGD of wastewater.

Houston METRO selected Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) as one of the firms to provide architecture/engineering services for its Universal Accessibility Initiative. As part of the project, METRO is optimizing bus routes and upgrading its vast network of bus stops and associated infrastructure. The agency divided the city into six zones and selected a firm to upgrade each zone. LAN is providing architecture/engineering services for Zone 5 and optimizing the bus routes in all zones.

The approximately $24 million Grand Oaks Elementary School will relieve Wildwood and Lakewood Elementary Schools. The 112,186-square-foot, single-story facility will accommodate 900 students from grades K-4.

On Jan. 28, Fort Bend County will celebrate the ribbon cutting of its new public transportation facility. The $21 million facility will serve as a one-stop shop for Fort Bend County Transportation Department's administrative, operations, maintenance, fuel depot and bus washing functions. It includes 18,600 square feet of office space, 28,400 square feet of maintenance bays, covered bus parking, a 7,100-square-foot fuel and washing station, a break area, relaxation lounge and kitchen spaces.

On Jan. 06, Sheldon Independent School District (ISD) will celebrate the completion of its new C.E. King High School. Designed by Huckabee and constructed by Durotech, the school is a flagship campus for Sheldon ISD’s program. The 580,000-square-foot campus will house up to 3,500 students. The school is designed like a college campus, with promenades and quads where students, faculty and community members can interact. Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Texas awarded civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) a gold medal for its work on the first phase of the Clear Lake flood control project. The project, named Exploration Green, is transforming a former 178-acre golf course into five detention ponds that can each hold 100 million gallons of stormwater. The project will also comprise 105 acres of natural habitat, 12 miles of hike-and-bike trails and two athletic fields.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Red and Blue Line stations

Construction is underway to extend platforms at Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Red and Blue Line stations to accommodate more riders and longer trains. Currently, the Red and Blue lines are limited to two-car trains due to platform lengths at 21 of the existing 28 stations. By expanding the platforms, three-car trains can be operated system-wide, increasing capacity by 33 percent. Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) is providing project management services for the platform extensions.

Yesterday, Bexar County and civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) celebrated the grand opening of the historic Hot Wells of Bexar County. Phase one of the revitalization efforts, completed in April 2019, involved stabilizing the existing structures, creating a park entrance and signage, building public bathrooms and extending utilities to the buildings. Phase two will focus on turning the ruins into a community resource.

Cross Village | Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing

Cross Village is a new on-campus living option for Oklahoma University students in Norman, Oklahoma. Chamberlin’s work included a peel-and-stick system for the below-grade waterproofing. The skin of all four buildings received a spray-applied air barrier, firestopping, acoustical sealants and joint sealants. In the parking garage, Chamberlin installed traffic coating, spray-applied water repellents, joint sealants and expansion joints.

University Boulevard Extension Project | Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc.

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Texas awarded civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) a gold medal for its work on the University Boulevard Extension project for the City of Sugar Land. The extension provides a critical connection to US 90A, diverting traffic from neighborhood surface streets and alleviating congestion on State Highway 6. By 2025, the extension will help increase capacity in University Boulevard by 12,000 cars a day.

On Nov. 27th, Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District will celebrate the opening of its new technology center. It features 3,900 square feet of training rooms on the first floor, a 2,000-square-foot network operating center with servers on the second floor, a 1,900-square-foot technology work area, 3,500 square feet of storage space, a warehouse for receiving technology equipment, and office space. The new technology center is part of GCCISD’s $267 million bond program.

On Oct. 30th, Sheldon Independent School District (ISD) will celebrate the formal groundbreaking of its new Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) School. This new two-story PVA school, designed by Stantec, includes a blackbox theater that converts from classroom to performance space, an art studio, music studio, dance studio and design studio. The new school is part of Sheldon ISD’s $285 million bond program. Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) is serving as the program manager.

Fort Bend County celebrated the groundbreaking of its new transit center on Aug. 29th.

The facility is designed to accommodate the County’s existing fleet of buses as well as future additions. It includes 18,600 square feet of office space, 28,400-square-foot maintenance bay, covered bus parking, and a 7,100-square-foot fuel and washing station. The facility contains a break area, relaxation lounge and kitchen spaces. Construction of the $21 million project will be completed in Oct. 2019.

McGee Beach

McGee Beach

The City of Corpus Christi has hired civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to rehabilitate the breakwater downtown near McGee Beach. LAN will provide coastal and civil engineering services.

This will be the first major improvement on the breakwater since its installation 50 years ago. The breakwater, along with the seawall, is the area’s secondary defense against hurricanes through storm surge protection. Construction is projected to start in the spring of 2019.

Milby High School was included in Houston Independent School District’s 2012 Bond Program to provide a 21st Century Campus that maintained the historic façade of one of Houston’s oldest high schools. The project, managed by CBRE | Heery, involved input from the local community in the planning, design and construction of the building.

Located in the heart of New Orleans, The Troubadour, a former office building destroyed by a devastating fire, now serves as a boutique hotel. Given its historical significance, the exterior renovation goal was to maintain historical aesthetics while providing protection against extreme weather conditions. YKK AP’s YHC 300 OG high performance hurricane impact curtain wall system was used to closely match the sightlines of the original windows and to provide protection against future storms.

Pythian Apartments

In downtown New Orleans, the Pythian Apartments were built in 1908 by the Grand Lodge Colored Knights, an African American fraternal organization. The restoration goal was to recreate the original look of the building. Glazing contractor DeGeorge Glass worked with YKK AP as the unitized curtain wall manufacturer and Winco Windows as the window supplier. The result is a stunning mix of historic and modern architecture, with a proper nod to the building’s history and neighborhood.

NOPSI Hotel

The NOPSI Hotel, an adaptive reuse project in downtown New Orleans, was originally built in 1927. The historic building served as headquarters to the city’s streetcar operator and utility company, New Orleans Public Service Inc. (NOPSI). Through YKK AP’s YHS 50 TU floor to floor curtain wall system, the project met strict historic requirements and strengthened the building façade through its main wind force resisting system (MWFRS)– a top priority for any post-Katrina renovation in New Orleans.

Area Rapid Transit (DART) has selected civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to manage the extension of platforms at 28 stations. The project will modify platforms along the Red and Blue light rail transit lines to accommodate 3-car trains. Modifications will include extending four aerial stations, 22 at-grade stations and two below-grade stations as well as adding raised platform areas to permit level boarding. DART estimates a 50 percent increase in system capacity.

Clear Lake City Water Authority's Exploration Green project will help alleviate drainage and flooding during extreme storm events. In addition, the land will be used by the area residents as a green space area. Improvements include hike, bike and pedestrian commuter trails, athletic fields, lakes, water features and abundant natural habitat. During Harvey, the project prevented flooding in more than 150 houses. Once completed in 2021, it will protect an additional 2000-3000 thousand homes.

Per its strategic plan, DCTA will issue projects to LAN that support initiatives such as A-train corridor expansions to Cotton Belt and North Denton, implementation of rail service from Carrollton to Frisco/Prosper, and evaluation of potential future rail expansions to other corridors throughout the service area.

Condit Elementary is Houston Independent School District’s new state-of-the-art, 21st century learning facility serving the growing Bellaire community.

Heery International provided program management services for the 83,000 SF two-story academic building that houses more than 25 learning centers. The pre-K – 5 campus offers a Spanish dual language program and a Vanguard neighborhood program. In keeping with the 21st century design, abundant natural light can be found throughout the campus.

The UPRR Safety Zone project is one of the critical components of the City’s Downtown Master Plan (DMP) developed in March 2016 to revitalize its downtown.
