This year’s 135 nominated projects came from across the spectrum, from the massive, impressive Hotel & Residences at L.A. Live to restored, historic horse stables, and from a renovated little league diamond to two complex airport additions. And, as usual, it was tough for the judges to narrow down the very best projects because they were all special in their way.
The jury did finally decide on 27 winning projects in Southern California and 26 in Northern California. Eligible projects were located in California and were substantially completed in the past year.
The winners will be featured in the December 2010 issue of California Construction and will be honored at an awards breakfast on Dec. 1 at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel in Long Beach and Dec. 2 at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel.The jury awarded projects based on entry criteria, including project management and client service, safety, design and functionality. Judges from firms nominated for an award were recused from voting in that category.
Our Northern California judges this year were C. Keith Boswell, director, Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill Architects; Kirsten Ritchie, principal, director of sustainable design, Gensler; Larry Hollis, vice president/business development, Rosendin Electric; Rich Zito, vice president, Shimmick Construction; Bob Christenson, senior vice president, Panattoni Construction; Ken Wenham, vice president/construction operations, Roebbelen; and Michael Gemmill, senior vice president, Nabih Youssef Engineers.
Southern California jurists included Peter Tuma, vice president/construction, Taisei Construction; Andrea Cohen Gehring, principal, DLR Group WWCOT; Lance Williams, executive director, USGBC-Los Angeles Chapter; John Saliba, vice president, FTR International; Jennifer Vasquez, marketing manager, C.W. Driver; and Chuck Richter, executive vice president, ACCO.
This year’s overall Best Projects were the Mineta San Jose International Airport Terminal Area Improvement Program in Northern California and the Orange County Water District Advanced Water Quality Assurance Laboratory in Southern California. For a list of all 2010 winners, click here.
