The Environmental Protection Agency is awarding $9 million in stimulus funds to support the SmartWay Clean Diesel Finance Program in the Houston-Galveston area. The grant will spur innovative clean diesel projects that protect air quality and create and retain jobs through an innovative financing program that will promote the purchase of new, cleaner or retrofitted vehicles and equipment at the Port of Houston. City docks connect directly to rail at the Port of Houston, which recently authorized a program to distribute nearly $3 million in Diesel Emission Reduction Act funds. Turner Construction Co.’s Houston office recently completed construction of the new 11,300-sq-ft municipal court building for the city of La Porte. Constructed with concrete tilt walls and a structural steel frame, it is designed to withstand a Category Three hurricane. Dallas-based Huitt-Zollars is the project architect. In an effort to expedite completion of the much-anticipated State Highway 161 project, in Dallas County, the North Texas Tollway Authority Board of Directors approved its largest single contract to date, a $414-million design-build project. The NTTA is using design-build for the development of State Highway 161, phase four. Houston businessman Alec G. Dreyer was recently named executive director of the Port of Houston Authority. Dreyer was previously CEO of Horizon Wind Energy, a Houston-based wind energy developer.
