The lab is testing only current technology that has been proved to work in the field and may also test future solar technology, Samdani says.

"In the demo lab, we have existing tech that's UL-listed [UL is an independent safety standard organization], and some that are pre-UL-listed," says Curcio. "Some companies asked if we can test their new devices on our roof."

Even with the new technologies, Samdani says one solar cell will not outpace others in the coming years. "There won't be just one winner," Samdani says. "Different [solar] tech will be used when there's a lot of land or if you're going to maintain and build it yourself."
