Tomorrow's Energy Grid

Mike Theilen, senior vice president for operations at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, installed a Tesla backup battery as part of a beta program a year ago. His solar array sets priorities: first, run the house; then, recharge the battery; finally, sell excess energy back to the grid. The battery costs $1,500 to install, plus $15 a month for 10 years. He says he is delighted with it and counts on it as insurance against rolling blackouts, should they happen.
