C.D. "Dan" Mote, the former chairman of the University of California's mechanical engineering department who also served for 12 years as president of the 35,000-student University of Maryland, College Park, is set to become the next president of the National Academy of Engineering. NAE members are set to elect him, the group's only candidate for the position, in March. His six-year term would begin on July 1, when he will succeed Charles M. Vest. Under Mote, the University of Maryland boosted research funding by more than 150% and attained the fourth-highest graduation rate for minority students among public universities, says NAE. Mote, an NAE member since 1988, has done research on the dynamics of gyroscopic systems.

Jennifer Joy Pinniger, president and CEO of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association, Alexandria, Va., will step down on Nov. 2. She has served in the role since 1996. The group, which says it represents member companies that annually produce more than 90% of crushed stone and 70% of sand and gravel in the U.S., adds that it will "soon announce a recruiting and selection process" for Pinniger's successor.

Contractor Sterling Construction Co. Inc., Houston, has named Peter E. MacKenna as CEO. In that

role,he replaces Patrick T. Manning, who remains chairman. MacKenna had been executive vice president and chief strategy officer of Skanska USA Civil since 2009 and previously served as president and CEO of several operating units of parent firm Skanska AB, according to Sterling. The company adds that Joseph Harper, current president and chief operating officer, will retire at the end of 2012.

Jeffrey Stone has joined Pittsburgh-based contractor dck Worldwide LLC as president of its new unit, Summit dck. He previously had been president of Phoenix-based Summit Builders, which dck acquired on Sept. 10. Summit ranks at No. 290 on ENR's list of the Top 400 Contractors, with $186.2 million in 2011 revenue. dck Worldwide ranks at No. 172, with $315 million in revenue last year.

Sharon Woodworth has joined architecture firm Shepley Bulfinch, Boston, as principal. Based in San Francisco, she had been an associate principal at Anshen + Allen, which was acquired by Stantec in 2010. Woodworth specializes in health-care design.

Design firm Stantec, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has named Elias Rashmawi as managing senior principal for urban and brownfield development. Now based in Rocklin, Calif., he had been vice president of environmental services at Vali Cooper and Associates. The firm also named Jim Gilbert as senior principal in its power practice, based in Portland, Ore. He had been managing director for the technical services group of Iberdrola Renewables.

Don Marano and Kent Wheeler have joined Terracon Consultants Inc., Olathe, Kan., as senior environmental scientist and regional manager, respectively. The new roles follow the firm's Sept. 12 acquisition of Salt Lake City-based IHI Environmental, of which they were the president and chief operations officer, respectively.

Craig Lesurf has been hired by Walsh Construction Co., Chicago, as general manager for its Canadian unit based in Vaughan, Ont. He was vice president of operations at Carillion Construction and, previously, senior vice president of construction at Vanbots Construction Corp. Lesurf also is a board member of the Toronto Construction Association.

AECOM-owned Tishman Construction Corp., New York City, has promoted Daniel P. McQuade to CEO and head of AECOM's construction services practice. With Tishman since 1984, he succeeds John Livingston, who becomes CEO of a sister company, AECOM Capital, the parent firm's principal investment unit for public-private partnerships and real estate.

 

O'CONNOR
Transportation engineering firm Volkert Inc., Mobile, Ala., has promoted Guy E. O'Connor to senior vice president and corporate administrative officer. The firm ranks at No. 119 on ENR's list of the Top 500 Design Firms, with $93 million in 2011 revenue. O'Connor, who joined the firm in 1984, had served as vice president.

Design firm Leo A Daly, Omaha, has promoted John J. Kraskiewicz to senior vice president and division head. He had been the unit's chief operations officer. The firm also has named Edward G. Benes as vice president and deputy general counsel. He previously served as senior counsel at Newmont Mining Corp., providing legal support for its capital construction projects group. Benes also was vice president and senior counsel at AECOM Technology Corp.
