The Jackson Barracks in New Orleans once again houses Louisiana National Guard members and their families, thanks to this $7.3-million renovation project. The garrison, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The team fully restored 17,785 sq ft of the wood-framed and masonry buildings to the buildings' original 1835 antebellum design. Intersecting walls and other components in the garrison barracks were not entirely square, requiring much work to be performed by hand to ensure that everything fit properly. Original materials were reused when possible, and materials were sourced from several states to get the best match.
"This project is a testament to craftsmanship and pride of work," said one judge. "The project team put exceptional effort forth to replacing a facility of functional value and a source of community pride."
