Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit has completed negotiations for the first phase of a commuter rail line in the two counties directly north of San Francisco: Sonoma and Marin.

The contract for $103.3 million involves building 37 miles of track, repairing 20 bridges, and preparing railroad crossings and stations. The rail is scheduled to be in service in 2014.

The contract includes two stations that were not initially intended for this first phase of construction. The Guerneville Road station, located in the northern part of Sonoma County, and the Atherton station, located in Marin County in the town of Novato, now will be a part of phase-one construction for Sonoma Marin Areal Rail Transit (SMART), which is working with the joint- venture team of Stacy and Witbeck Inc., Alameda, Calif., and Herzog Contracting Corp., St. Joseph, Mo. The JV nosed out Shimmick Construction, Oakland, Calif., which came in with a bid of $114.4 million.
