Wind technology costs and power prices are falling for land-based and offshore wind projects, according to three Energy Dept. reports released Aug. 23. The U.S. wind-energy sector installed 7,017 MW of capacity last year, bringing the total utility-scale wind capacity to nearly 89,000 MW, according to the 2017 Wind Technologies Market Report by the department’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. New offshore wind turbines are achieving 10 MW to 12 MW of capacity compared to an average capacity of 2.3 MW for land-based turbines.
