The Ohio Dept. of Transportation is adding $100 million to upgrade the Central Interchange in Akron. Now budgeted at $151 million, the project will help untangle the 60-year-old junction of Interstates 76 and 77 and State Route 8 with high-level ramps, replacing existing structures whose sharp turns were notorious for causing frequent crashes. More than two miles of sound walls and a new pedestrian bridge will also be constructed as part of the project, along with more than 10 miles of interstate pavement upgrades. ODOT expects construction to begin in 2021 and last four years.
