The city of Fort Pierce, Fla., is considering a plan to relocate a wastewater treatment plant to allow for the redevelopment of the site. The 6-million-gallon-per-day plant, which occupies highly desirable beachfront property along Florida’s so-called Treasure Coast, would be relocated to a site eight miles inland at an estimated cost of more than $108 million, according to officials. A 2012 charrette determined there is community support to redevelop the 36-acre site, which juts into the Indian River Lagoon, to attract a resort to boost Fort Pierce as a major tourist destination.
