Children’s Hospital Colorado has taken the next steps toward construction of its new hospital in Colorado Springs by naming GE Johnson Construction Co., Denver and Colorado Springs, as the project’s general contractor.

The hospital will be located in the north part of the city on the UCHealth-Memorial Hospital North campus at the intersection of North Union Boulevard and Briargate Parkway.

The 280,000-sq-ft facility will include a pediatric-only emergency department, pediatric inpatient beds, a neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric operating room.

It will incorporate pediatric-specific design elements to create a healing environment and provide the newest in tele-health technologies to more effectively deliver health-related services and information.

Project leaders unveiled a sign on June 22 at the hospital site. “This sign is literally a sign of things to come for us,” said Greg Raymond, regional vice president of Children’s Hospital Colorado in southern Colorado. “It is a priority for us to engage as many local resources in the creation of this new children’s hospital, and we are excited to work with GE Johnson as the general contractor.”

The selection of GE Johnson marks the end of a two-and-a-half-month search, during which time 14 contractors were considered.

The hospital also will be served by more than 500 team members, many of whom already live and work in the community, including nearly 40 physicians and provider specialists.

The hospital will operate independently under its own license; have dedicated entrances, including a dedicated emergency department entrance; and be staffed with pediatric experts trained exclusively to care for children, adolescents and young adults.
